Truth, Lies and Bullshit distinguishing classes of dishonesty

چکیده
In this paper, we distinguish three important classes of dishonesty that can occur in multi-agent systems, as well as in human society. In particular, the distinction is being made between lies and bullshit, following the work of Harry Frankfurt. The difference is that someone who tells a lie has access to the truth, whereas the concept of bullshit requires no knowledge of the truth at all. That is, the liar knows that what he says is not true, whereas the bullshitter has no proper knowledge to support the statements he or she is making. We point out that different situations, in multi-agent systems as well as in human society, provide strong individual incentives for bullshit. Overall, our analysis is meant to identify some particularly troublesome issues regarding reasoning in

Truth, Lies and BS; distinguishing classes of dishonesty
In this paper we distinguish three classes of dishonesty: lies, bullshit and deception. We show how these classes can be modelled in classical epistemic logic (S5) as well as in formal argumentation. A lie, in its most simple form, can be defined as the utterence of a statement which the speaker knows not to be true. That is, an agent X is lying on proposition p iff the following holds: utters ...

This paper provides formal accounts of dishonest attitudes of agents. We introduce a propositional multi-modal logic that can represent an agent’s belief and intention as well as communication between agents. Using the language, we formulate different categories of dishonesty. We first provide two different definitions of lies and provide their logical properties. We then consider an incentive ...

Bullshit”, as Harry Frankfurt writes in his recent book “On Bullshit”, is a communication that pretends to be genuinely informative but really is not. The person who talks bullshit, Frankfurt holds, is unconcerned with whether what he says is true, but is very concerned with how he is thought of by the listener. In this paper, I discuss Frankfurt’s theory of bullshit, making specific reference ...
متن کاملShooting the shit: the role of bullshit in organisations
Abstract This article argues that a great deal of both ‘talk’ and ‘text’ in organisational settings is, ultimately, bullshit. By ‘bullshit’ I mean the type of organisational speech and text that is produced with scant regard for the truth and is used to willfully mislead and to pursue the interests of the bullshitter. Bullshit is particularly prevalent in immaterial roles that lack a clear sens...

Some narrations are assumed to apply Toriya to avoid absolute lies. They also attribute the use of half-truth to the prophets. However, analysis of content and document of mentioned narrations, along with analyzing relevant verses in the Qurān and defining an acceptable criterion to distinguish truths from lies, show that half-truth is false. Regarding religious beliefs, it is considered to be ...
