J5.4 Use of Weather Radar with Lumped Parameter Hydrologic Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Lumped parameter hydrologic models are frequently used for operational streamflow forecasting in the United States. With the deployment of the Weather Surveillance Radar 1988 Doppler (WSR88D), many hydrologists will use radar-rainfall data as input to these models. WSR-88D precipitation products can be used in a variety of ways (Shedd and Fulton, 1993; Lindsey, 1993). In this paper, we examine two approaches. Runoff simulations based on an existing lumped parameter model, using mean areal precipitation as input, are compared to those based on a reformulated model, which attempts to better utilize the information available from weather radars by including the spatial variability of rainfall over the land segment area. The effect of precipitation sampling on model parameter calibration is also examined.

Use of Next Generation Weather Radar Data and Basin Disaggregation to Improve Continuous Hydrograph Simulations
Currently, the river forecasting system deployed in each of 13 River Forecast Centers of the National Weather Service primarily uses lumped parameter models to generate hydrologic simulations. With the deployment of the weather surveillance radar 1988 Doppler radars, more and more precipitation data with high spatial and temporal resolution have become available for hydrologic modeling. Hydrolo...

Rainfall is the driving force behind all hydrologic processes in a watershed, and therefore the driving force in hydrologic modeling. In the past, raingauge data has been used as the primary input for these models. However, raingauge networks are generally sparse and insufficient to capture the spatial variability across large watersheds. A relatively new alternative is high−resolution radar ra...

Two of the most relevant components of any flood forecasting system, namely the rainfall-runoff and flood inundation models, increasingly benefit from the availability of spatially distributed Earth Observation data. With the advent of microwave remote sensing instruments and their all weather capabilities, new opportunities have emerged over the past decade for improved hydrologic and hydrauli...

متن کاملCalibration of a semi-distributed hydrologic model for streamflow estimation along a river system
An important goal of spatially distributed hydrologic modeling is to provide estimates of streamflow (and river levels) at any point along the river system. To encourage collaborative research into appropriate levels of model complexity, the value of spatially distributed data, and methods suitable for model development and calibration, the US National Weather Service Hydrology Laboratory (NWSH...
