A Framework for Building Intelligent Learning Environments in Ill-defined Domains

چکیده
A critical problem of instruction in ill-structured and complex domains has been how to help students attain a deep understanding of a complex concept. Solutions for this problem are usually very costly. For example, the practical course in medical education often requires one-to-one assistance of the expertteacher for the student to be able to account for a great diversity of complex and real clinical situations. Intelligent learning environments could provide significant help for instruction in ill-defined domains. In this paper, we show how to exploit advanced technologies such as temporal Bayesian networks and computer-based simulations to help the student in advanced learning of complex concepts such as the sacro-iliac screw fixation in orthopedic surgery.

A Constraint-Based Expert Modeling Approach for Ill-Defined Tutoring Domains
We introduce an approach for representing and diagramming machine-readable expert models for intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) and virtual practice/training environments. Building on previous work on constraint-based expert models, we address the challenges of implementing ITS features within complex, ill-defined learning domains. Our constraint-based expert model (CBEM) can be used, in conju...
متن کاملLeveraging a Generalized Tutoring Framework in Exploratory Simulations Of Ill-Defined Domains
Generalized frameworks for constructing intelligent tutors, such as GIFT promise many benefits. These benefits should be extended to systems that work in ill-defined domains, especially in simulation environments. This paper presents ideas for understanding how ill-defined domains change the tutoring dynamic in simulated environments and proposes some initial extensions to GIFT that accommodate...
متن کاملBuilding Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Ill-Defined Domains
Domains in which traditional approaches for building tutoring systems are not applicable or do not work well have been termed "ill-defined domains.” This chapter provides an updated overview of the problems and solutions for building intelligent tutoring systems for these domains. It adopts a presentation based on the following three complementary and important perspectives: the characteristics...
متن کاملUsing Knowledge Discovery Techniques to Support Tutoring in an Ill-Defined Domain
Domain experts should provide relevant knowledge to a tutoring system so that it can guide a learner during problem-solving learning activities. However, for ill-defined domains this knowledge is hard to define explicitly. As an alternative, this paper presents a framework to learn relevant knowledge related to procedural tasks from users’ solutions in an ill-defined procedural domain. The prop...
متن کاملIntelligent Tutoring Systems for Ill-Defined Domains: Assessment and Feedback in Ill-Defined Domains
Intelligent tutoring systems have increased student learning in many domains with well-structured tasks such as math and science. As these successes may be applicable to ill-defined domains, is important to investigate how to apply tutoring paradigms for tasks that are ill-defined. We focus on the domain of intercultural competence, where asynchronous online discussion is a typical instructiona...
