Structural bias in phonology

چکیده
Chomsky and Halle (1968) propose an Evaluation Procedure that prefers featurally simple rules and grammars, and Bach and Harms (1972) propose that this bias for structural simplicity can explain instances of historical change in terms of rule simplication in learning. In this talk, I discuss an alternative model of structural bias (Pater and Moreton 2012) cast in a Maximum Entropy framework (Goldwater and Johnson 2003, Hayes and Wilson 2008), which does not invoke an explicit simplicity metric. This MaxEnt model closely resembles the Configural Cue Model (Gluck and Bower 1988), a domain-general model of concept learning, which was abandoned twenty years ago because it does not match the classic results in visual concept learning (Shepard et al. 1961 et seq.). I present the results of an experiment that supports the predictions of the MaxEnt model against those of a model preferring featurally simple rules (Moreton et al. 2013). This phonotactic learning study differs from the classic visual concept learning studies in a number of ways. Based on a review of further studies (see esp. also Kurtz et al. 2013), it appears that the key difference is that the classic visual concept methodology encourages explicit hypothesis formation.

Phonology and handedness in primary school: predictions of the right shift theory.
BACKGROUND The right shift (RS) theory of handedness suggests that poor phonology may occur in the general population as a risk associated with absence of an agent of left cerebral speech, the hypothesised RS + gene. The theory predicts that poor phonology is associated with reduced bias to right-handedness. METHODS A representative cohort of primary school children was assessed on tests of p...
متن کاملEffect of bias voltage on structural and mechanical characteristics of diamond-like carbon thin film applied by ion beam deposition
This study, investigates the effect of bias voltage on structural changes of diamond-like carbon thin film created by ion beam deposition is investigated. For this purpose, the bias voltage in the values of 0 V, -50 V, -100 V and -150 V on the AA5083 aluminum alloy was considered. Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate structural. Influence of the bias voltage on the thickness and roughness of...

The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
