Evaluation of two harvesting systems for the supply of wood-chips in Norway spruce forests affected by bark beetles

چکیده
Nacrtak For sanitary reasons, spruce trees affected by bark beetles (Ips typographus L.) should be removed out of the stand as soon as possible, to avoid the propagation of the beetles to healthy trees. One possibility, to utilize the accruing crown material in a reasonable way (instead of burning it) could be, to use it as wood-chips for biomass heating plants. The aim of this project was therefore to determine the productivity of two harvesting and processing systems for wood-chips as a joint-product of round wood in Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) forests affected by bark beetles. Two systems with different sorting criteria were studied: processing of sawlogs, pulpwood and wood-chips (System A) in comparison to the processing of only sawlogs and wood-chips (System B). In System A, the energy wood was chipped with a chipper mounted on a forwarder that was working directly in the stand. In System B, the material to be chipped was previously concentrated along the forest road with a forwarder, and a chipper mounted on a truck was used for chipping. In System A, 0.18 t of dried chips could be harvested per m3 of round wood, and in System B 0.26 t of dried chips per m3 of round wood. The cost of chipping in the stand was 4.74 /m3 of chips and the cost of chipping along the forest road after transporting the chipping material by a forwarder was 5.63 /m3 of chips. Therewith, a cost-covering supply of wood-chips may be obtained out of such stands. Concerning the ratio of energy input to energy output it can be said that the systems required 1.5% and 2% of energy output that was obtained using the respective system.

Influence of bark on fuel ethanol production from steam-pretreated spruce
BACKGROUND Bark and bark-containing forest residues have the potential for utilization as raw material for lignocellulosic ethanol production due to their abundance and low cost. However, the different physical properties and chemical composition of bark compared to the conventionally used wood chips may influence the spruce-to-ethanol bioconversion process. This study assesses the impact of ba...

The conservation of saproxylic beetles in boreal forest: importance of forest management and dead wood characteristics Doctoral dissertation ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 91-576-7115-X Forest management has altered the age structure, tree species composition and dead wood availability of Swedish boreal forests. As a consequence, many saproxylic (wood living) insect species have decre...

Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) produces an oleoresin characterized by a diverse array of terpenoids, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, and diterpene resin acids that can protect conifers against potential herbivores and pathogens. Oleoresin accumulates constitutively in resin ducts in the cortex and phloem (bark) of Norway spruce stems. De novo formation of traumatic resin ducts (TDs) is ...

ABSTRACT- Soilless cultivation systems are used to attain higher performance, improve crop quality, conserve water and land, and protect the environment better. This study has attempted to use some agricultural wastes and organic matter, and management practices to optimize water holding capacity of cultural media, which are suitable for the growth of tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum.). متن کاملThe (w)hole story: facilitation of dead wood fauna by bark beetles?
Facilitation between species is thought to be a key mechanism in community assembly and diversity, as certain species create microhabitats for others. A profound characteristic of forest ecosystems is a large amount of dead wood which is colonised by a vast array of invertebrate species. Bark beetles (Scolytinae) feed and breed on dying or dead trees, puncturing holes into the bark and engravin...
