Volcanism and its role in Climate on Venus
نویسنده
چکیده
There has clearly been significant volcanic activity on the surface of Venus in recent geological epochs and there is a great deal of indirect evidence that this may continue at the present time. However, the current level of activity is unknown and remains controversial, with estimates for the rate of emission of volcanic gases into the atmosphere ranging from essentially quiescent to very high levels, possibly orders of magnitude greater than those currently found on Earth. This large uncertainty makes it difficult to evaluate the importance of volcanism to the present-day climate on Venus, or to estimate how conditions at the surface might change in the distant future when volcanism subsides.

Climate change as a regulator of tectonics on Venus.
Tectonics, volcanism, and climate on Venus may be strongly coupled. Large excursions in surface temperature predicted to follow a global or near-global volcanic event diffuse into the interior and introduce thermal stresses of a magnitude sufficient to influence widespread tectonic deformation. This sequence of events accounts for the timing and many of the characteristics of deformation in the...
متن کاملOn rates and styles of late volcanism and rifting on Venus
[1] We investigated the possibility of significant variations in the rates and styles of volcanism and rifting during the time postdating the formation of regional plains on Venus. We analyzed the age relations of all known impact craters 30 km in diameter (183 craters) with the neighboring geologic units. Of these we selected 164 craters which were superposed on regional plains and determined ...
متن کاملThe Recent Evolution of Climate on Venus
The present climate of Venus is controlled by an efficient carbon dioxide–water greenhouse effect and by the radiative properties of its global cloud cover. Both the greenhouse effect and clouds are sensitive to perturbations in the abundance of atmospheric water vapor and sulfur gases. Planetary-scale processes involving the release, transport, and sequestering of volatiles affect these abunda...
متن کاملFloor-fractured impact craters on Venus: Implications for igneous crater modification and local magmatism
Regional tectonism and volcanism affect crater modification and crater loss on Venus, but a comparison of Venusian craters to lunar floor-fractured craters uggests that a third style of more localized, crater-controlled magmatism also may occur on Venus. Based on lunar models for such magmatism, Venusian crustal conditions hould generally favor crater-filling volcanism over crater-centered floo...
متن کاملThe stability of climate on Venus
The climate of Venus is to a large degree controlled by the radiative properties of its massive atmosphere. However, volcanic outgassing and surface-atmosphere interactions may moderate the atmospheric abundances of CO2 and other radiatively important volatiles. Recently, work on the interpretation of the impact cratering record has placed limits on the magnitude of the volcanic flux. Additiona...
