چکیده

It is well-known that the throughput of wireless mesh networks without frequency re-use decreases as O(1/N), where N is the number of nodes in the network. In this paper we build on this result and obtain expressions for calculating the throughput in IEEE 802.11-based mesh networks without interference. Both expressions for single-frequency and multifrequency mesh networks are obtained. We compare the analytical results with measurements of the UDP throughput in a real IEEE 802.11 mesh network, and show that our analytical expressions can closely approximate the throughput in real mesh networks.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11 in Multi-hop Wireless Networks

Multi-hop wireless networks provide a quick and easy way for networking when we need a temporary network or when cabling is difficult. The 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) plays an important role in the achievable system performance. There have been many studies on analytic modeling of single-hop 802.11 wireless networks but only a few on the analysis of multihop wireless networks. Furthermor...

MARS: Link-layer rate selection for multicast transmissions in wireless mesh networks

IEEE 802.11 devices dynamically choose among different modulation schemes and bitrates for frame transmissions. This rate adaptation, however, is restricted only to unicast frames. Multicast (and broadcast) frames are constrained to use a fixed low bit-rate modulation, resulting in low throughput for multicast streams. Availability of high bandwidth and efficient use of the medium is crucial to...

Cross-Layer Optimization of Voice over IP in Wireless Mesh Networks

Optimizing the operation of IEEE 802.11 networks requires estimatingthe load of the wireless channel. The channel busy fraction, which is thefraction of time in which the wireless channel is sensed busy due to suc-cessful or unsuccessful transmissions, can be used as indicator for this pur-pose. It can be obtained from e.g. the IEEE 802.11k channel load reportor hardware-spe...
