Application of chemical dosimetry to hydroxyl radical measurement during underwater discharge

چکیده
The pulsed streamer discharge was generated in the liquid by using point-to-sphere electrode geometry. In this study, the OH radicals were measured indirectly by a chemical dosimetry. Terephthalic acid (TA) was used as an OH radical scavenger and fluorescence of the resulted 2-hydroxyterephthalic acid (HTA) was measured. Instead of the use of conventional fluorescence spectrophotometer, a novel fluorescence observing system by using a light-emitting diode (LED) as a light source and a simplified spectrometer as a detector was developed. As a result, the fluorescence intensity increased with time elapsed during the discharge process. The production rate of OH radicals in the liquid was estimated to be of the order of 10 M s to 10 M s under the present experimental conditions. As an advantage of terephthalate dosimetry, it was found that the discharge system in the small reactor used in our experiment was a useful means for in-situ evaluating formation of OH radicals in an underwater discharge.

Light Spectrum of Compact Fluorescent Lamps in Iranian Market and Possibility of Hydroxyl Radical Production
Background and purpose: Despite growing use of energy-saving lamps or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), there are concerns about ultraviolet radiation in their output. In this study, the output of CFLs available in Iranian market in the range of infrared, visible, and ultraviolet were measured and the possibility of hydroxyl radical production by their radiation was evaluated. Materials and me...
متن کاملFree hydroxyl radical dosimetry by using 1 MHz low level ultrasound waves
ABSTRACTBackground : In order to quantify effects of ultrasound irradiation parameters under therapeutic condition, especially sonodynamic therapy, it is initially necessary to evaluate inertial cavitation activity in vitro conditions therefore, in this study, the effect of 1 MHz low level ultrasound based on °OH radicals generated by acoustic inertial cavitation in aqueous solution was monit...
متن کاملQuantification of Radicals Generated in a Sonicator
The hydroxyl radical (OH•) is a powerful oxidant produced as a consequence of cavitation in water. It can react nonspecifically in breaking down persistent organic pollutants in water into their mineral form. It can also recombine to form hydrogen peroxide which is very useful in water treatment. In this study, terephthalic acid (TA) and potassium iodide dosimetry were used to quantify and inve...
متن کاملMeasurement of OH Radicals in Aqueous Solution Produced by Atmospheric-pressure LF Plasma Jet
The chemical effects of the plasma are largely related to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). OH radical is one of the ROS and has a strong oxidation potential. In this study, low frequency (LF) plasma jet was generated at atmospheric-pressure and irradiated onto the surface of aqueous solution. A portion of the OH radicals dissolved into aqueous solution was measured by chemical do...
