چکیده
SISTER: A SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONIST SIMULATION OF TRADE AND EMERGENT ROLES Deborah Vakas Duong George Mason University, 2004 Thesis Director: John Grefenstette SISTER, a Symbolic Interactionist Simulation of Trade and Emergent Roles, captures the fundamental social process by which macro level roles emerge from micro level symbolic interaction. SISTER may be used for the computational social science objective of modeling social coordination in human societies, or for the artificial intelligence objective of coordinating coevolving agents in artificial societies. The knowledge in a SISTER society is held culturally, suspended in the mutual expectations agents have of each other based on signs (tags) that they read and display. In this study, this knowledge includes how to create complex goods. The knowledge of coordinating their creation arises endogenously. A symbol system emerges to denote these tasks. In terms of information theory, the degree of mutual information between the agent’s signs (tags) and their behavior increases over time. In SISTER societies, mutual information

Autonomous Tags: Language as Generative of Culture
The first intelligent agent social model, created by the author in 1991, used tags with emergent meaning to simulate the emergence of institutions based on the principles of interpretive social science. This symbolic interactionist simulation program existed before Holland’s Echo, however, Echo and subsequent programs with tags failed to preserve the autonomy of perception of the agents that di...

Nexus Network Learner is an intelligent agent based simulation used to study Irregular Warfare (IW) in several major studies at the Department of Defense (DoD). Heterogeneous autonomous agents, each with their own separated inductive learning mechanism, have initial attributes and behaviors in proportion to demographic groups in the simulated population, and learn new behaviors as they serve cu...

متن کاملA Symbolic Interactionist History of Sexuality?
Many historians of sexuality explore how sexual subjectivity has taken shape in recent centuries, while historical sociologists tend to focus upon the intimate and erotic aspects of emergent social institutions. Symbolic interactionist sociology can add a new dimension to the existing debates, shifting the primary focus from the history of sexuality to a theoretically informed analysis of sexua...
متن کاملSymbolic Interactionist Ethnography: Toward Congruence and Trustworthiness
In social science literature, researchers have discussed the implications of using symbolic interactionist ethnography. While the value of such an approach is accepted in social science research, it has not received adequate attention in IS literature. More importantly, there is a need to begin developing consensus on a set of principles to help researchers effectively combine the theoretical s...
