Bayesian Kernel Mixtures for Counts.

چکیده
Although Bayesian nonparametric mixture models for continuous data are well developed, there is a limited literature on related approaches for count data. A common strategy is to use a mixture of Poissons, which unfortunately is quite restrictive in not accounting for distributions having variance less than the mean. Other approaches include mixing multinomials, which requires finite support, and using a Dirichlet process prior with a Poisson base measure, which does not allow smooth deviations from the Poisson. As a broad class of alternative models, we propose to use nonparametric mixtures of rounded continuous kernels. An efficient Gibbs sampler is developed for posterior computation, and a simulation study is performed to assess performance. Focusing on the rounded Gaussian case, we generalize the modeling framework to account for multivariate count data, joint modeling with continuous and categorical variables, and other complications. The methods are illustrated through applications to a developmental toxicity study and marketing data. This article has supplementary material online.

Learning mixtures of polynomials from data using B-spline interpolation
Hybrid Bayesian networks efficiently encode a joint probability distribution over a set of continuous and discrete variables. Several approaches have been recently proposed for working with hybrid Bayesian networks, e.g., mixtures of truncated basis functions, mixtures of truncated exponentials or mixtures of polynomials (MoPs). We present a method for learning MoP approximations of probability...
متن کاملMODELING OF FLOW NUMBER OF ASPHALT MIXTURES USING A MULTI–KERNEL BASED SUPPORT VECTOR MACHINE APPROACH
Flow number of asphalt–aggregate mixtures as an explanatory factor has been proposed in order to assess the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures. This study proposes a multiple–kernel based support vector machine (MK–SVM) approach for modeling of flow number of asphalt mixtures. The MK–SVM approach consists of weighted least squares–support vector machine (WLS–SVM) integrating two kernel funct...
متن کاملAdaptive Bayesian density estimation using Pitman-Yor or normalized inverse-Gaussian process kernel mixtures
We consider Bayesian nonparametric density estimation using a Pitman-Yor or a normalized inverse-Gaussian process kernel mixture as the prior distribution for a density. The procedure is studied from a frequentist perspective. Using the stick-breaking representation of the Pitman-Yor process or the expression of the finite-dimensional distributions for the normalized-inverse Gaussian process, w...
متن کاملPosterior Convergence Rates of Dirichlet Mixtures at Smooth Densities
We study the rates of convergence of the posterior distribution for Bayesian density estimation with Dirichlet mixtures of normal distributions as the prior. The true density is assumed to be twice continuously differentiable. The bandwidth is given a sequence of priors which is obtained by scaling a single prior by an appropriate order. In order to handle this problem, we derive a new general ...
متن کاملThe L1-consistency of Dirichlet mixtures in multivariate Bayesian density estimation
Density estimation, especiallymultivariate density estimation, is a fundamental problem in nonparametric inference. In the Bayesian approach, Dirichlet mixture priors are often used in practice for such problems. However, the asymptotic properties of such priors have only been studied in the univariate case. We extend the L1-consistency of Dirichlet mixutures in the multivariate density estimat...
