The stability-diversity debate as related to plant-pollinator networks in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest

چکیده

Studies about the relationship between diversity and stability have reached varying conclusions. I used plant-pollinator interaction data sampled from meadows in the HJ Andrews to examine this relationship. I found a clear reciprocal relationship between the number of species in an interaction network and the connectance of the network, as theoretically expected. The number of plant and pollinator species in the meadows changed between the years of 2011-2015. Using two measures of compositional similarity, I determined that more complex networks, i.e. networks with more species and a higher connectance, tend to remain more similar between years in plant and pollinator species composition, although plants show a clearer trend. This trend suggests that more complex networks are more stable.

Changes in Phenology of Flowering, Correlation with Climate Variability, and Response of Honeybees

Many studies have found that the timing of flowering has shifted temporally in response to climate change, but few have ascertained the possibility of asynchrony developing between flowering and pollinator appearance. Collapses in pollination could have serious consequences for interdependent plant-pollinator networks. Five years of plant-pollinator data collected in twelve montane meadows at t...

Relationship Between Pollination Behavior of Invasive Honeybees and Native Bumblebees in Montane Meadows

Data on plant-pollinator interactions collected over six summers in montane meadows of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest provided an opportunity to explore the association between two genera of generalist pollinators: Apis and Bombus. Ten plots in each meadow were “watched” for fifteen minutes five times every summer, and each flower species in a meadow-watch was assigned a class based on the ...

Population dynamics of plant and pollinator communities: stability reconsidered.

Plant-pollinator networks are systems of outstanding ecological and economic importance. A particularly intriguing aspect of these systems is their high diversity. However, earlier studies have concluded that the specific mechanisms of plant-pollinator interactions are destabilizing and should lead to a loss of diversity. Here we present a mechanistic model of plant and pollinator population dy...

The influence of pollinator traits on algorithm-based module detection in the H.J. Andrews plant-pollinator network

Modularity is an important structural pattern in plant-pollinator networks that, when identified and examined, can lead to better understanding of drivers behind plant-pollinator interactions and contributions to resilience. Most module-detection algorithms rely on network structure alone. However, Newman and Clauset’s (2016) annotated network algorithm is able to leverage additional informatio...

Plant Diversity and Richness in Relation to Environmental Gradient in Zagros Ecosystems, West of Iran

Plant diversityis essential to maintain the health of planet's ecosystems. Conservation of biodiversity is necessary for the ecological stability and productivity in natural ecosystems. The aim of this research was to study the biodiversity and richness of plant species (including trees, shrubs and grasses) related to the environmental factors (soil and physiography) in the forests of Zagros, w...
