چکیده

XENON was discovered in 1898 and first used as an anesthetic in 1951. It is more potent than nitrous oxide (N2O) with a minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of approximately 71%, and its low blood-gas partition coefficient of 0.14 (recently recalculated as 0.115) results in rapid induction and recovery. Interest in xenon is high because of medical and environmental concerns about N2O; however, use may be constrained high cost. Fully closed rebreathing circuits are one method of minimizing costs. It is possible to close a conventional circle system, with the anesthesiologist varying the fresh gas flow to match uptake via the lungs. However, better control might be achieved by automation of this procedure. We describe a closed breathing system that may have advantages versus other designs.

[Effects of xenon anesthesia on cerebral blood flow in neurosurgical patients without intracranial hypertension].

Among anesthetic agents used in neurosurgery xenon appears to be the most advantageous. It preserves arterial blood pressure, assures rapid recovery and neuroprotection. But the data is lacking on xenon effect upon cerebral blood flow under anesthetic conditions. We measured flow velocity in middle cerebral artery in neurosurgical patients without intracranial hypertension during closed circuit...

Model predictions of gas embolism growth and reabsorption during xenon anesthesia.

BACKGROUND It is not readily obvious whether an intravascular bubble will grow or shrink in a particular tissue bed. This depends on the constituent gases initially present in the bubble, the surrounding tissue, and the delivered gas admixture. The authors used a computational model based on the physics of gas exchange to predict cerebrovascular embolism behavior during xenon anesthesia. METH...

The Modification and Performance of a Large Animal Anesthesia Machine (Tafonius®) in Order to Deliver Xenon to a Horse

INTRODUCTION Xenon, due to its interesting anesthetic properties, could improve the quality of anesthesia protocols in horses despite its high price. This study aimed to modify and test an anesthesia machine capable of delivering xenon to a horse. MATERIALS AND METHODS An equine anesthesia machine (Tafonius, Vetronic Services Ltd., UK) was modified by including a T-connector in the valve bloc...

Cerebral oxygen saturation is improved by xenon anaesthesia during carotid clamping

INTRODUCTION The cerebral protective effect of xenon anesthesia could be of interest during carotid surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of xenon on cerebral oxygen saturation with those of propofol during carotid clamping. METHODS After approval of Research Ethics Board and patient informed consent, 74 patients scheduled for carotid endarterectomy were enrolled. Pati...

Automatic drug delivery in anesthesia - the design of an anesthesia assistant system ⋆

The main goals of general anesthesia are adequate hypnosis, analgesia and maintenance of vital functions. For a number of surgical procedures neuromuscular block is essential. Furthermore patient safety and cost reduction as minimized drug consumption and shortened post-operative recovery are main issues and motivation of automation efforts in anesthesia. Since the beginning of the eighties eng...
