چکیده

Buildings represent a major part of the world energy requirement. The simulation of combined heat, air and moisture (HAM) and pollutant transfer in this context is important to predict the indoor air quality (IAQ), along with the thermal comfort inside the buildings. Moreover, it is important to have appropriate levels of indoor humidity along with the room temperature as movement of water vapor through the building envelope causes a lot of harm to the building structure and reduces the quality of its thermal insulation leading to higher energy demand. In modern houses people is exposed to a big amount of building materials, many of which release pollutants, many of them are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that degrade the IAQ. The knowledge of the peak loads, temperatures, humidity levels, pollutant dispersion can help to optimize the design of new buildings or existing buildings that need to be refurbished and therefore results in energy efficient buildings. In this work a modular object-oriented building simulation tool (NEST) with CFD&HT code Termofluids, capable of coupling different levels of simulation models, allowing the simulation of heat, air, moisture and pollutant distribution (multizone model, envelope model, room analysis and HVAC system) and VOC is presented. The modular approach gives flexibility of choosing a model for each element and to have different levels of modeling for different elements in the system. Special attention has been focused on: the large eddy simulation turbulence models used for the room air dynamics and pollutants distribution transport and high performance parallel software. Parallelization of the building simulation is necessary if some critical processes/zones need to be modeled with more detail for reducing computational time. The main focus of this article is to couple the HAM and pollutants models for the building envelope with CFD&HT models with heat, moisture and pollutant transfer models for room airflow. An analysis of the effect of different materials on the IAQ of the buildings will be performed.

Natural Ventilation: Analysis of Indoor Airflow in an Assumed Cubic Building with Opposite Openings by CFD Investigations

The natural ventilation is an easy way to exchange the indoor polluted warm air with outdoor fresh air. The wind power injects outdoor fresh air into the building. A good indoor air current and subsequently a proper exhaust depend on the openings’ conditions and their situations. A serious architectural question is under what conditions of the openings the wind-cross ventilation can be effectiv...

Modeling Airflow in Urban Form against Sand Accumulation: a Case of Saltation in the Town of Timimoun in Southern Algeria

In our present research, we focus on the modeling of airflow related to natural disasters, such assand accumulation, with urban form studies. The objective is to find which urban form can promote sand passing andreduce as much as possible stagnation of sand in the building area (streets, alleys, etc.). The urban form design will bediscussed through the simulation of airflow by using Computation...

Numerical Investigation of Indoor Air Quality and Thermal Comfort in a Ventilated Room

Understanding the behavior of airflow in a room is essential for building designers to provide the most efficient design of ventilation system, and having acceptable indoor air quality. This trend is the motive to solve the relationship between airflow parameters and thermal comfort. This paper investigates airflow characteristics, indoor air quality (IAQ), and the thermal comfort (TC) in a ven...

Using Coupled Energy, Airflow and IAQ Software (TRNSYS/CONTAM) to Evaluate Building Ventilation Strategies.

Building energy analysis tools are available in many forms that provide the ability to address a broad spectrum of energy-related issues in various combinations. Often these tools operate in isolation from one another, making it difficult to evaluate the interactions between related phenomena and interacting systems, forcing oversimplified assumptions to be made about various phenomena that cou...

An experimental method for contaminant dispersal characterization in large industrial buildings for IAQ applications

Spatial contaminant distribution in large semiopen building areas such as sports arenas, warehouses, atriums, malls and other industrial halls is critical to estimating exposure, health risks and building energy performance. It is considered a challenge to measure experimentally how effectively the ventilation system removes or dilutes the pollutant in a large open space, taking into considerat...
