The Physiological Behavior of Rubidium and Cesium in Relation to That of Potassium

چکیده

Interest in the biological properties of rubidium and cesium stems from their close physicochemical relationship to potassium. Reference to the Periodic Table shows these elements to be adjacent members of the Group I alkali metal series, which has the order: lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium. In terms of their chemical behavior the elements of this series may be separated into two groups, the division falling between sodium and potassium. Potassium, rubidium, and cesium display very similar electrical, chemical, and physical properties, which differ only quantitatively in a well-defined manner. When considered in this context, a comparison of the biological behavior of these ions can provide much important information to the investigator concerned with the mechanisms handling the alkali metals in the living organism. A study of the comparative biochemistry of rubidium and cesium is therefore an excellent, although indirect, method for investigation of the normal biochemistry of potassium. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly certain aspects of the physiology of rubidium and cesium with particular reference to their relation to potassium. Space does not permit a complete or detailed discussion of this subject, and some active fields of investigation have been arbitrarily omitted. Emphasis has been chiefly placed on those topics most pertinent to mammalian, or at least vertebrate, physiology; newer developments in certain areas with which the author has had some personal experience have received greatest attention.

Adsorption of Cesium, Strontium, and Rubidium radionuclides in the Mag-molecular process: The influence of important factors

In this study, the adsorption of cesium, strontium, and rubidium radionuclides by ferritin magmolecules in a batch system was investigated under different experimental conditions. The experiments were conducted in a pilot plant that involved the contactor unit and the magnetic separator unit. The impact of the pollutant concentrations, adsorbent concentration, and pH on the efficiency of the pr...

Cesium Accumulation and Growth Characteristics of Rhodococcus erythropolis CS98 and Rhodococcus sp. Strain CS402.

Growth and cesium accumulation characteristics of two cesium-accumulating bacteria isolated from soils were investigated. Rhodococcus erythropolis CS98 and Rhodococcus sp. strain CS402 accumulated high levels of cesium (approximately 690 and 380 mumol/g [dry weight] of cells or 92 and 52 mg/g [dry weight] of cells, respectively) after 24 h of incubation in the presence of 0.5 mM cesium. The opt...

The Selective Absorption of Potassium by Animal Cells

1. Individual variations in the potassium content of the fresh muscles of frogs are notable even when computed as percentages of the dry solids. The potassium content averaged higher in freshly collected summer frogs than in winter frogs after a period of captivity. 2. Muscles show a loss of from 8 to 15 per cent of their potassium during perfusion with potassium-free Ringer solution but tenaci...

Crystal and molecular structures of alkali oxalates: first proof of a staggered oxalate anion in the solid state.

The molecular and crystal structures of solvent-free potassium, rubidium, and cesium oxalates have been determined ab initio from high-resolution synchrotron and X-ray laboratory powder patterns. In the case of potassium oxalate K(2)C(2)O(4) (a = 10.91176(7) A, b = 6.11592(4) A, c = 3.44003(2) A, orthorhombic, Pbam, Z = 2), the oxalate anion is planar, whereas in cesium oxalate Cs(2)C(2)O(4) (a...

The concentration dependence of active potassium transport in the human red blood cell.

The relation between the active potassium influx in the human red blood cell and the extracellular potassium concentration does not appear to be consistent with the Michaelis-Menten model, but is adequately described by a model in which two potassium ions are required simultaneously at some site or sites in the transport mechanism before transport occurs. The same type of relation appears to ex...
