Remote Sensing & its applications in Disaster Management like Earthquake and Tsunamis

چکیده
This paper highlights the use of remote sensing technologies in disaster management. Impact of natural disasters on life, property and ability to predict them would be one of the main contributions of remote sensing technology. Involving remote sensing with GIS and web technology makes it an extremely powerful tool to identify indicators of potential disasters. Information sharing through Internet reduces data acquisition time and thus providing efficient way to carry out real time disaster predictions (Earthquake, Tsunamis etc.). Changing land use and assessment of its impact on the system in general within reasonable time frame and with greater degree of accuracy becomes possible with new technology.

Role of Recent Technology in Disaster Management
Natural disasters are extreme events within the earth's system that result in death or injury to humans, and damage or loss of valuable goods, such as buildings, communication systems, agricultural land, forest, natural environment etc. For the management of natural disasters a large amount of multi -temporal spatial data is required. Satellite remote sensing is the ideal tool for disaster mana...
متن کاملRemote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Contribution to the Inventory of Infrastructure Susceptible to Earthquake and Flooding Hazards in North-Eastern Greece
For civil protection reasons there is a strong need to improve the inventory of areas that are more vulnerable to earthquake ground motions or to earthquake-related secondary effects, such as landslides, liquefaction or soil amplifications. The use of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methods along with the related geo-databases can assist local and national authorities to...
متن کاملIntegration of high-resolution, Active and Passive Remote Sensing in support to Tsunami Preparedness and Contingency Planning
Known from time immemorial to the inhabitants of the Pacific region, tsunamis became worldwide known with the great Indian Ocean disaster of December 26, 2004, and its toll of about 234'000 deaths, 14'000 missing and over 2,000,000 displaced persons. Beyond triggering the international help in managing the immediate post-event, and sustaining eventual rehabilitation of about 10'000 km2 of hit c...
متن کاملAutomatic Assessment of Earthquake Damaged Area Using Scale- Space Classification Techniques
Disaster management has got an important facet, viz., disaster mitigation, which in turn depends upon early damage assessment. Remote Sensing is considered as an ideal technique for obtaining early information. This exercise has been carried out for assessing the damaged area, automatically, based on high-resolution post-earthquake images in Gujarat, India and high resolution satellite images o...
متن کاملTsunami Vulnerability Mapping Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques: A Case Study of Kollam District, Kerala, India
Tsunamis are caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a sea. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions, landslides, glacier calvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water have the potential to generate a tsunami. The coastal areas of Kollam district, the present study area was seriously affected by the catastr...
