چکیده

We present original apparent resistivity records for stations located in the Chinese provinces of Hebei and Sichuan, along with seismicity patterns, fault maps, and limited hydrologic data. These records are part of a 30-year dalabase of geoelectric signals t_ha__t have been recorded in China by a nationwide network of more than 100 stations et up by the State Seismological Bureau of the People's Republic of China. The da_t_8base includes the time period during which the M 7.8 1976 Tangsban and M 7.2 1976 Songpan earthquakes occurred. Resistivity data recorded in and around the epicentral region of the Tangshah event show coherent changes, both temptral and in areal distribution, years and months before and after the earthquakes. A regional change in water table occurred more than 3 years prior to the Tangshah earlhqnalre. The resistivity and water table signals appear to correlate in the 2to 3-year period prior to the earthquake. Rainfall records from the region around Tang•an, extending to the dries of Beijing and Tianjin, do not appear to account for the resistivity changes. Regional seismicity and active fault patterns in north China indicate that deformation occurs mainly along the borders of large tectonic blocks. The source region for the geoelectric signals appem• to lie within a large shear zone, at the edge of a tectonic block undergoing rotation. The Tangshah epicentral area is thus only part of a larger zone of deformation. We suggest that dilafional strain associated with the opening of fractures may lower resistivity and water table. For shallow crustal depths, such as those monitored by the Chinese geoelectric network, dilation and resistivity changes are expecte• to begin at stress levels well below the peak values of the seismic cycle. Our study suggests that in some cases the areal extent of geoelectric signals may be significantly larger than that of the eventual earthquake source dimension. The Chinese geoelectric database offers an oplxamnity to improve our understanding of possible geoelectric precursors to earthqu•s.

A New Approach to Investigate the existence of patterns in Geoelectrical Signals related to Seismicity of Western Greece, using supervised pattern recognition

In this study, a supervised pattern recognition technique is used to examine Long Term Geoelectric Potential difference (LTGP) data recorded during the 1993-1997 period in Western Greece. It presents initial results from an attempt towards automated discovery of similarities between LTGP data recorded during periods of similar seismic activity. In particular, we investigate whether patterns exi...

GENERATION OF SYNTHETIC EARTHQUAKE RECORDS BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNIQUES

For seismic resistant design of critical structures, a dynamic analysis, based on either response spectrum or time history is frequently required. Due to the lack of recorded data and randomness of earthquake ground motion that might be experienced by the structure under probable future earthquakes, it is usually difficult to obtain recorded data which fit the necessary parameters (e.g. soil ty...

Appraisal of the evolutionary-based methodologies in generation of artificial earthquake time histories

Through the last three decades different seismological and engineering approaches for the generation of artificial earthquakes have been proposed. Selection of an appropriate method for the generation of applicable artificial earthquake accelerograms (AEAs) has been a challenging subject in the time history analysis of the structures in the case of the absence of sufficient recorded accelerogra...

Subsurface structural characterization of the Chooman Dam site using geoelectric method

A recent evaluation of Chooman Dam highlighted the potential for dam failure due to either seepage or an earthquake on nearby faults. Unfortunately, this dam suffers from infiltration or leakage problems related mainly to different geological and tectonic factors. In response to these concerns, electrical resistivity surveys employing vertical electric sounding (VES) method were carried out at ...

Geoelectric potential changes: possible precursors to earthquakes in Japan.

Whether electromagnetic precursors to earthquakes (EQs) exist is an important question not only for EQ prediction but also for understanding the physical processes of EQ generation. Slow transient geoelectric potential changes have been observed before several recent EQs in Japan. In most cases, they appeared 1-19 days before the EQs, and their duration and intensity were several minutes to 1 h...
