Efficient Computation of Isometry-Invariant Distances Between Surfaces

چکیده
We present an efficient computational framework for isometry-invariant comparison of smooth surfaces. We formulate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance as a multidimensional scaling (MDS)-like continuous optimization problem. In order to construct an efficient optimization scheme, we develop a numerical tool for interpolating geodesic distances on a sampled surface from precomputed geodesic distances between the samples. For isometry-invariant comparison of surfaces in the case of partially missing data, we present the partial embedding distance, which is computed using a similar scheme. The main idea is finding a minimum-distortion mapping from one surface to another, while considering only relevant geodesic distances. We discuss numerical implementation issues and present experimental results that demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency. ∗Department of Computer Science, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa 32000, Israel.

Generalized multidimensional scaling: a framework for isometry-invariant partial surface matching.
An efficient algorithm for isometry-invariant matching of surfaces is presented. The key idea is computing the minimum-distortion mapping between two surfaces. For this purpose, we introduce the generalized multidimensional scaling, a computationally efficient continuous optimization algorithm for finding the least distortion embedding of one surface into another. The generalized multidimension...
متن کاملIsometry-invariant Matching of Point Set Surfaces
Shape deformations preserving the intrinsic properties of a surface are called isometries. An isometry deforms a surface without tearing or stretching it, and preserves geodesic distances. We present a technique for matching point set surfaces, which is invariant with respect to isometries. A set of reference points, evenly distributed on the point set surface, is sampled by farthest point samp...
متن کاملGeodesic Distances to Landmarks for Dense Correspondence on Ensembles of Complex Shapes
Establishing correspondence points across a set of biomedical shapes is an important technology for a variety of applications that rely on statistical analysis of individual subjects and populations. The inherent complexity (e.g. cortical surface shapes) and variability (e.g. cardiac chambers) evident in many biomedical shapes introduce significant challenges in finding a useful set of dense co...
متن کاملA Multigrid Approach for Multi-dimensional Scaling∗
A multigrid approach for the efficient solution of large-scale multidimensional scaling (MDS) problems is presented. The main motivation is a recent application of MDS to isometry-invariant representation of surfaces, in particular, for expression-invariant recognition of human faces. Simulation results show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms conventional MDS algorithms.
متن کاملBending Invariant Representations for Surfaces
Isometric surfaces share the same geometric structure also known as the ‘first fundamental form’. For example, all possible bending of a given surface, that include all length preserving deformations without tearing or stretching the surface, are considered to be isometric. We present a method to construct a bending invariant canonical form for such surfaces. This invariant representation is an...
