Intrinsic limits on resolutions in muon- and electron-neutrino charged-current events in the KM3NeT/ORCA detector

چکیده
Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multimegaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1–20GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Long baseline neutrino oscillation disappearance search using a ν beam from muon decays
We study the feasibility of performing a νμ disappearance long-baseline experiment using a neutrino beam coming from muon decays. The advantage of such a technique with respect to the production of neutrino beams from pions is that in a muon decay both muon and electron neutrinos are produced in the same quantity. In case of νμ → ντ,s oscillations, the νe charged current (CC) events can be used...

IceCube is a neutrino telescope currently under construction in the glacial ice at South Pole. At the moment half of the detector is installed, when completed it will instrument 1 km3 of ice providing a unique experimental setup to detect high energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources. In this work the sensitivity of the complete IceCube detector for a diffuse electron-neutrino flux is analyz...

MiniBooNE, the Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment at Fermilab, will confirm or refute the existence of the neutrino oscillation signal seen by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) Experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron neutrinos in a beam of muon neutrinos. This work presents preliminary results from the first round of a...
متن کاملHigh Energy Muon Momentum Estimation from Multiple Coulomb Scattering in Dense Detectors
A method is described for estimating muon track momentum from the distribution of hits along tracks in dense calorimeters due to multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS). The method requires only well-aligned conventional drift chambers or similar tracking devices and can be implemented with or without a magnetic field present. Neutrino experiments can use this technique to increase acceptance for lar...
متن کاملApplication of Bayes’ Theorem to Muon Track Reconstruction in Amanda
Abstract The AMANDA neutrino telescope detects neutrinos by observing Cherenkov light from secondary leptons produced in charged current neutrino interactions. At lower energies, a background of penetrating muons approximately times as numerous as neutrino-induced muon events is rejected by looking for muons travelling upward through the earth. Because the detector is designed to maximize effec...
