Magmatic activity beneath the quiescent Three Sisters volcanic center, central Oregon Cascade Range, USA

چکیده
[1] Images from satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) reveal uplift of a broad 10 km by 20 km area in the Three Sisters volcanic center of the central Oregon Cascade Range, 130 km south of Mt. St. Helens. The last eruption in the volcanic center occurred 1500 years ago. Multiple satellite images from 1992 through 2000 indicate that most if not all of 100 mm of observed uplift occurred between September 1998 and October 2000. Geochemical (water chemistry) anomalies, first noted during 1990, coincide with the area of uplift and suggest the existence of a crustal magma reservoir prior to the uplift. We interpret the uplift as inflation caused by an ongoing episode of magma intrusion at a depth of 6.5 km.

Are There Significant Hydrothermal Resources in the U.s. Part of the Cascade Range?
The Cascade Range is a geothermal dichotomy. On the one hand, it is an active volcanic arc above a subducting plate and is demonstrably an area of high heat flow. On the other hand, the distribution of hydrothermal manifestations compared to other volcanic arcs is sparse, and the hydrothermal outflow calculated from stream chemistry is low. Several large estimates of undiscovered geothermal res...
متن کاملQuantifying magmatic, crustal, and atmospheric helium contributions to volcanic aquifers using all stable noble gases: Implications for magmatism and groundwater flow
[1] We measure all stable noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) in spring waters in the Oregon Cascades volcanic arc and in eastern Oregon, USA. We show that in order to estimate magmatic helium (He) contributions it is critical to simultaneously consider He isotopic ratios, He concentrations, and mixing of He components. Our component mixing analysis requires consideration of all measured noble gas...
متن کاملdegassing in the Oregon Cascades
The carbon isotope content of dissolved inorganic carbon was measured for large cold springs in the central Oregon Cascades. Low 14C activities in some of the springs are interpreted to result from the dissolution of diffuse emissions of magmatic CO2, even though volcanic activity has not occurred in this area for more than 1300 yr. On the basis of dissolved magmatic carbon concentrations in th...
متن کاملGIS as a Tool for Assessing Volcanic Hazards, Vulnerability, and at Risk Areas of the Three Sisters Volcanic Region, Oregon
Active volcanoes give significant threats to the populations that live in their proximity. The Three Sisters Volcanic region is one of 9 threatening volcanoes within the Cascades volcanic arc. Eruptions are probable which makes it essential to complete hazard, vulnerability, and risk assessments so that proper planning, education and mitigation procedures can be implemented prior to the threat ...
متن کاملUsing Magma Mixing/Mingling Evidence for Understanding Magmatic Evolution at Mount Bidkhan Stratovolcano (South-East Iran)
Mount Bidkhan stratovolcano is located in the central Iranian volcanic belt. It is composed of several types of pyroclastic deposits, lava flows and intrusive bodies. Textural and chemical characteristics of plagioclase phenocrysts from the eruptive products volcanic edifice, record complex magma mixing events over the lifetime of the volcano. Evidences such as xenocrystic high Al+Ti clinopyrox...
