چکیده

We analyze the cross-sectional differences in the tail risk of equity returns and identify the drivers of tail risk. We provide two statistical procedures to test the hypothesis of cross-sectional downside tail shape homogeneity. An empirical study of 230 US non-financial firms shows that between 2008 and 2011 the cross-sectional tail shape is homogeneous across equity returns. The heterogeneity in tail risk over this period can be entirely attributed to differences in scale. The differences in scales are driven by the following firm characteristics: market beta, size, book-tomarket ratio, leverage and bid-ask spread.

Price-Level Targeting and Risk Management in a Low-Inflation Economy

With inflation and policy interest rates at historically low levels, policymakers show great concern about "downside tail risks" due to a zero lower bound on nominal interest rates. Low probability or tail events, such as sustained deflation or recession, are disruptive for the economy and can be difficult to resolve. This paper shows that price-level targeting mitigates downside tail risks res...

Analyzing the Incremental Information Content of Earnings Downside Risk in Explaining the Cost of Capital

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a new measure of risk, the earnings downside risk on capital costs, and comparing the incremental information content of this measure to other risk metrics. accordingly, two hypotheses were defined and the effect of the earnings downside risk on the cost of capital as well as the information content of this measure in relation to the...

Is There an Intertemporal Relation between Downside Risk and Expected Returns?

This paper examines the intertemporal relation between downside risk and expected stock returns. Value at Risk (VaR), expected shortfall, and tail risk are used as measures of downside risk to determine the existence and significance of a risk-return tradeoff. We find a positive and significant relation between downside risk and the portfolio returns on NYSE/AMEX/Nasdaq stocks. VaR remains a su...

Explaining Heterogeneity in Risk Preferences Using a Finite Mixture Model

This paper studies the effect of the space (distance) between lotteries' outcomes on risk-taking behavior and the shape of estimated utility and probability weighting functions. Previously investigated experimental data shows a significant space effect in the gain domain. As compared to low spaced lotteries, high spaced lotteries are associated with higher risk aversion for high probabilities o...
