چکیده

We present results from a numerical conduit model of nonequilibrium magma degassing. We show that CO2 /H2O concentration ratios in pyroclastic obsidian from the ca. 1340 A.D. Mono Craters eruption may record nonequilibrium degassing during magma ascent. Our results also indicate that permeability-controlled, open-system gas loss is consistent with obsidian formation and promotes nonequilibrium degassing at shallow depths. Because of the low diffusivity of CO2 relative to H2O, we find that CO2 concentrations can remain above equilibrium during magma ascent. To reproduce Mono Craters volatile concentrations, our model does not require volatile supersaturation, or an exsolved gas phase, prior to magma eruption. We estimate magmatic volatile contents of approximately 400 ppm CO2 and 4.6 wt.% H2O. However, nonequilibrium is contingent upon low rates of bubble nucleation to shallow depths, so that average bubble number densities are of order 10 m during most of the magma ascent. If bubble number densities during ascent of the Mono Craters magma were greater than 1011 m , degassing was in equilibrium and a CO2-rich vapor buffer is required to reproduce observed CO2 /H2O concentration ratios. Mount St. Helens and Santiaguito lava domes: The effect of short- term eruption rate on surface texture and degassing processes

In order to assess the effect of eruption rate on the surface morphology and degassing mechanisms of silicic lava flows, we studied surface characteristics and obtained water content and hydrogen isotopic values of samples from flows at the Mount St. Helens and Santiaguito lava domes. We compared the surface textures and inferred degassing processes to short-term extrusion rates and found that ...

Magma balloons or bombs?

To the Editor — Detailed analysis of volcanic materials1 allows the study of eruptions that have not been witnessed directly. Rotella et al.2 undertake the challenge of interpreting submarine volcaniclastic deposits around Macauley Volcano, part of the Kermadec Arc in the southwest Pacific Ocean. They propose a ‘Tangaroan’ eruption style, based on the textural characteristics of dredged pumice ...

Magma degassing and basaltic eruption styles: a case study of V2000 year BP Xitle volcano in central Mexico

To investigate the relationship between volatile abundances and eruption style, we have analyzed major element and volatile (H2O, CO2, S) concentrations in olivine-hosted melt inclusions in tephra from the V2000 yr BP eruption of Xitle volcano in the central Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The Xitle eruption was dominantly effusive, with fluid lava flows accounting for V95% of the total dense rock...

Model for the origin, ascent, and eruption of lunar picritic magmas

A model for the origin, ascent, and eruption of the lunar A17 orange glass magma has been constructed using petrological constraints from gas solubility experiments and from analyses of the lunar sample 74220 to better determine the nature and origin of this unique explosive eruption. Three stages of the eruption have been identified. Stage 1 of the eruption model extends from ~550 km, the A17 ...

Long-term explosive degassing and debris flow activity at West Mata submarine volcano

WestMata is a 1200mdeep submarine volcano where explosive boninite eruptions were observed in 2009. The acoustic signatures from the volcano’s summit eruptive vents Hades and Prometheus were recorded with an in situ (~25m range) hydrophone during ROV dives in May 2009 and with local (~5 km range) moored hydrophones between December 2009 and August 2011. The sensors recorded low frequency (1–40 ...
