چکیده

Using Chandra observations we have measured the energy-resolved dust-scattered X-ray halo around the low-mass X-ray binary GX5-1, which shows signs of both singlyand multiply-scattered X-rays. We compared the observed X-ray halo at various energies to predictions from a range of dust models. These fits used both smoothly-distributed dust as well as dust in clumped clouds, with CO and 21 cm observations helping to determine the position of the clouds along the line of sight. We found that the BARE-GR-B model of Zubko, Dwek & Arendt (2004) generally led to the best results, although inadequacies in both the overall model and the data limit our conclusions. We did find that the composite dust models of Zubko, Dwek & Arendt (2004), especially the “no carbon” models, gave uniformly poor results. Although models using cloud positions and densities derived naively from CO and 21 cm data gave generally poor results, plausible adjustments to the distance of the largest cloud and the mass of a cloud in the expanding 3 kpc Arm lead to significantly improved fits. We suggest that combining X-ray halo, CO, and 21 cm observations will be a fruitful method to improve our understanding of both the gas and dust phases of the interstellar medium. Spectroscopic Identification of the Infrared Counterpart to GX5-1

Using CGS4 on UKIRT, we have obtained a 1.95-2.45 μm infrared spectrum of the primary candidate counterpart to the bright Z LMXB GX5-1. IR photometry by Naylor, Charles, & Longmore (1992) and the astrometry of Jonker et al. (2000) had previously identified this star as the most likely counterpart to GX5-1. The spectrum presented here clearly shows Brackett γ and He lines in emission, for the fi...

The Galactic X-ray halo

Weanalyzed the intensity distribution of the 3/4 keV and 1/4 keV diffuse soft X-ray background by correlating the ROSAT all-sky survey with the Leiden/Dwingeloo H i survey. We found that the 3/4 keV and 1/4 keV intensity distributions can be modelled by a contribution from an isothermal (kT = 0.135 keV) flattened X-ray halo superposed on the radiation from an extragalactic X-ray background. The...

A Powerful Radio Halo in the Hottest Known Cluster of Galaxies 1 E 0657 − 56

We report the detection of a diffuse radio halo source in the hottest known cluster of galaxies 1E0657−56 (RXJ0658−5557). The radio halo has a morphology similar to the X-ray emission from the hot intracluster medium. The presence of a luminous radio halo in such a hot cluster is further evidence for a steep correlation between the radio halo power and the X-ray temperature. We favour models fo...

M ar 2 00 3 A New Method to Use Chandra Data to Resolve the X - Ray Halos Around Point Sources and Its Application to Cygnus X - 1

The excellent angular resolution, good energy resolution and broad energy band make Chandra ACIS the best instrument for studying the X-ray halos around some galactic X-ray point sources caused by the dust scattering of X-rays in the interstellar medium, but the direct images of bright sources obtained with ACIS usually suffer from severe pileup. Making use of the fact that an isotropic image c...

Discovery of a Giant Radio Halo in a New Planck Galaxy Cluster Plckg171.9-40.7

We report the discovery of a giant radio halo in a new, hot, X-ray luminous galaxy cluster recently found by Planck, PLCKG171.9-40.7. The radio halo was found using Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations at 235 MHz and 610 MHz, and in the 1.4 GHz data from a NRAO Very Large Array Sky Survey pointing that we have reanalyzed. The diffuse radio emission is coincident with the cluster X-ray e...
