چکیده

Large or specialised software systems-of-systems are now mostly composed of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software packages. In mainstream application areas, such as office automation, this approach has proved satisfactory once the teething problems have been overcome. Defence and Research have also followed this trend in a desire to cut costs and take advantage of the functionality of commercial software. However, the difference between the often demanding requirements for defence systems-of-systems, and those against which COTS software has been designed, has resulted in unfavourable outcomes. This paper discusses the insights that can be gleaned from systems theory and practice to improve the probability of successfully integrating COTS components into defence systems. In particular the paper will provide a practical definition of systems of systems (SOS) and then will compare the generic design drivers for software of this scale with that of modest stand alone packages. A systems approach is invoked to help understand the problem context presented by the SOS evolution task and uses this to identify ideas that may be able to mitigate some of the issues. The paper will conclude by identifying some practical approaches that can help realise evolving Defence and Research SOS. APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE

Improving Processes for Commercial Off - the - Shelf - Based Systems

F or many programs, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products offer the promise of rapid delivery to end users, shared development costs with other customers , and an opportunity to expand business and mission capabilities and performance as improvements are made in the marketplace. But the promise of COTS products is often not realized in practice. Why? An important factor is that organizations...

Hla-cspif Panel on Commercial Off-the-shelf Distributed Simulation

Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) simulation packages are widely used in many areas of industry. Several research groups are attempting to integrate distributed simulation principles and techniques with these packages to potentially give us COTS distributed simulation. The High Level Architecture – COTS Simulation Package Interoperation Forum (HLA-CSPIF) is a group of researchers and practitioner...

Understanding the Impact of Change in COTS-Based Systems

The use of commercial off-the-shelf software components (COTS) promises significant advances in terms of greater productivity, reduced time to market and reliability. However, the blackbox nature of these components poses equally significant challenges for managing maintenance, future change to component-based systems and in particular the impact of proposed changes. Unless these challenges are...

Data Integrity Limitations in Highly Secure Systems

We discuss a class of computer/network architectures that supports multilevel security while utilizing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) workstations and COTS productivity software applications. We show that a property of these architectures is that, while supporting multilevel confidentiality policies, they do not generally support partially ordered integrity policies: specifically, these archit...

Safety Assurance of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Software

Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software is increasingly being suggested for use in systems development, for reasons including cost, functionality, useability, testedness, availability of support and upgrades. At the same time, standards for use of software in safetyrelated systems are becoming increasingly stringent. This paper examines the issue of providing safety assurance for systems invol...
