چکیده

[1] This paper analyses the role of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the interannual variability of the leaf appearance dates of boreal forests in the Northern Hemisphere (1982–2004). We find significant negative correlations between the ENSO, quantified by means of the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), and the leaf appearance dates in central Siberia with up to 9 months lag. The correlations between leaf appearance dates and summer Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) show a pattern that resembles the ENSO phenomena with positive and significant correlations in the East Pacific and negative in the West. These findings are explained by the role of SOI on Sea Level Pressures, 500 hPa Geopotential and the wind flow direction and intensity during the months of leaf appearance (April and May) and on average temperatures, which determine noticeably the date of leaf appearance. Role of atmospheric circulation with respect to the interannual variability in the date of snow cover disappearance over northern latitudes between 1988 and 2003

[1] This paper analyzes the main spatial patterns in the dates of snow cover disappearance variability over northern latitudes between 1988 and 2003. The dates of snow cover disappearance were calculated using satellite passive microwave data from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager. Spatial and temporal patterns were obtained using principal components analysis in the S mode. We identified eig...

The Influence of El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on Caribbean Tropical Cyclone Activity

Caribbean basin tropical cyclone activity shows significant variability on interannual as well as multidecadal time scales. Comprehensive statistics for Caribbean hurricane activity are tabulated, and then large-scale climate features are examined for their impacts on this activity. The primary interannual driver of variability is found to be El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which alters levels of...

Interannual covariability in Northern Hemisphere air temperatures and greenness associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation

[1] In this paper, we estimate the year-to-year variations in northern vegetation greenness as they relate to the dominant modes of climate variability. In particular, we analyze spatial data of Northern Hemisphere satellite-sensed vegetation greenness, surface temperature, precipitation, and upper air data for the 1982–1998 period to isolate well correlatedmodes of variability between temperat...

Long-term variability in the El Niño/Southern Oscillation and associated teleconnections

We analyze global patterns of reconstructed surface temperature for insights into the behavior of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and related climatic variability during the past three centuries. The global temperature reconstructions are based on calibrations of a large set of globally distributed proxy records, or “multiproxy” data, against the dominant patterns of surface temperature...

Oceanic-atmospheric variability and western U.S. snowfall

[1] A study of the influences of interdecadal and interannual oceanic-atmospheric influences on April 1 Snow-Water Equivalent (SWE) in the western U.S. is presented. SWE data was identified at 323 Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) SNOTEL (SNOwpack TELemetrysites) stations for the period of 1961 to 2004 and for 121 SNOTEL stations for the period 1941 to 2004. The phases (cold/negativ...
