چکیده

Plants spend their entire life cycles rooted in one place. Thus, plant development, like the real estate business, is largely driven by location, location, location. A seedling emerges, perceives the hormonal and light signals that control its vegetative and reproductive development, finds and utilizes soil bound nutrient sources, and fends off hostilities wrought upon it by changing abiotic conditions and by pathogens. The mechanisms by which plant cells receive physiological stimuli and transduce these into the cell are the central focus in many areas of plant biology. Laboratories are homing in on molecular mechanisms involved in hormone signaling, light reception, disease resitance, and nitrogen fixation. A Cold Spring Harbor Symposium called Signaling in Plant Development, which met from September 27 to October 1, 1995, in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, was organized by Venkatasen Sundaresan (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, New York), June Nasrallah (Cornell University, Ithaca, New York), and Nam-Hai Chua (Rockefeller University, New York) to detail these advances. Several surprising strategies in control of signal transduction highlight what continues to be an exciting time in plant biology research.

Involvement of phospholipid signaling in plant growth and hormone effects.

Biochemical and genetics studies demonstrated the critical roles of phospholipid signaling and relevant molecules in regulating multiple processes of plant growth and development, signal transduction, mediating hormone effects and cell responses to environmental stimuli, through modulating protein subcellular localization, cross-talking with other signaling or metabolic pathways, or interacting...

Signaling Peptides in Plants

In multicellular organisms, growth and development need to be precisely coordinated and are strongly relying on positional information. Positional control is achieved through exchanges of molecular messages between cells and tissues by means of cell-to-cell communication mechanisms. Especially in plants, accurate and well-controlled cell-to-cell communication networks are essential because of t...

Cell Wall Heterogeneity in Root Development of Arabidopsis

Plant cell walls provide stability and protection to plant cells. During growth and development the composition of cell walls changes, but provides enough strength to withstand the turgor of the cells. Hence, cell walls are highly flexible and diverse in nature. These characteristics are important during root growth, as plant roots consist of radial patterns of cells that have diverse functions...

Post-Synthetic Defucosylation of AGP by Aspergillus nidulans α-1,2-Fucosidase Expressed in Arabidopsis Apoplast Induces Compensatory Upregulation of α-1,2-Fucosyltransferases

Cell walls are essential components of plant cells which perform a variety of important functions for the different cell types, tissues and organs of a plant. Besides mechanical function providing cell shape, cell walls participate in intercellular communication, defense during plant-microbe interactions, and plant growth. The plant cell wall consists predominantly of polysaccharides with the a...

Talking through walls: mechanisms of lateral root emergence in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Lateral roots are formed postembryonically and determine the final shape of the root system, a determinant of the plants ability to uptake nutrients and water. The lateral root primordia are initiated deep into the main root and to protrude out the primary root they have to grow through three cell layers. Recent findings have revealed that these layers are not merely a passive physical obstacle...
