smaller particles but did not solubilize them. Much less gangliosides were extracted after ultrasonic treatment of homogenates containing nuclei. 5. The effect of added agents and various treatments to homogenates on the quantity of gangliosides extracted from particulate and supernatant fractions was studied. 6. Addition of protamine or histone completely prevented the extraction of gangliosides. 7. A comparison of the affinity of subcellular fractions for basic proteins with the content of gangliosides was made. The fractions containing most of the tissue gangliosides showed the greatest affinity for basic proteins except a fraction rich in myelin fragments. 8. The probable localization of gangliosides in cell membranes is discussed.

The effect of 3ot,20fl-pregnanediol and other steroids on bilirubin conjugation was examined using liver tissue from human and four other species. متن کاملStudies on carbohydrate metabolism in rat liver slices. IX. Ionic and hormonal effects on phosphorylase and glycogen.
In 1939, Ostcrn, Herbert, and Holmes (1) reported the synthesis in vitro of glycogen in rabbit liver slices incubated in a Ringer’s solution containing 1 per cent glucose and high levels of calcium ion. This observation on rabbit liver was readily confirmed; however, no net glycogen increase could be obtained in rat liver experiments under similar conditions. Since liver slices were observed to...
متن کاملMetabolism of Mamose and Glucose by Adipose Tissue and Liver Slices from Normal and Alloxan-diabetic Rats*
The ability of mannose to substitute for glucose in metabolic reactions has been known for over 40 years. In 1913 Levine and Meyer (1,2) reported the ability of preparations of canine leukocytes and rabbit kidney to convert either hexose to d-lactic acid. Since then, with the use of parameters which have included hexose uptake or phosphorylation, tissue respiration, lactic acid production, or s...

متن کاملThe effect of the ionic environment on the synthesis of glycogen from glucose in rat liver slices.
The effect of the ionic environment of the incubating medium upon glycogen formation by liver slices was first reported by Ostern, Herbert, and Holmes (1). Using rabbit liver slices, they found that, aerobically, calcium stimulated glycogen formation in a modified Ringer’s medium containing 1 per cent glucose. Addition of phosphate to this medium resuhed in a decrease in glycogen synthesis. The...
