چکیده

Introduction: On July 4, 2005, NASA’s Deep Impact mission successfully executed an impact experiment on the surface of the comet 9P/Tempel 1 [1]. The fly-by spacecraft included two visible color imagers (mediumand high-resolution; MRI and HRI) and a near-infrared (IR) spectrometer [2]. The nucleus was observed prior to impact and the ejecta were monitored for 15 mins. after impact and then later (~45 mins. after impact) during look-back observations after impact [1]. Water ice was detected and mapped in all three phases of observations. We present the identification, spatial distribution, and particle size of water ice [3] and trace its path during impact and in relation to the comet’s structure.

The distribution of water ice in the interior of Comet Tempel 1 Jessica

The Deep Impact flyby spacecraft includes a 1.05 to 4.8 μm infrared (IR) spectrometer. Although ice was not observed on the surface in the impact region, strong absorptions near 3 μm due to water ice are detected in IR measurements of the ejecta from the impact event. Absorptions from water ice occur throughout the IR dataset beginning three seconds after impact through the end of observations,...

Deep Impact : Excavating Comet Tempel

Introduction: On 4 July 2005, Deep Impact delivered 19 GJoules of kinetic energy to the nucleus of comet Tempel 1, taking numerous images and spectra of the comet before, during, and after the impact. The preliminary analysis of the data has already lead to significant, new understanding of cometary properties and behavior [1] and this talk will summarize the present state of our understanding ...

Ground - based visible and near - IR observations of Comet 9 P / Tempel 1 during the Deep Impact encounter ✩

We present the results of our visible and near-IR observations of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 during the Deep Impact encounter. The comet was observed before, during, and after impact from Kitt Peak National Observatory (J, H, K) and Observatorio Astronómico Nacional-San Pedro Mártir, Mexico (B, V, R, I). High time-resolution images in R, J, H, and K the night of impact with a 3.′′5 radius aperture revea...

Spectropolarimetry of the Deep Impact Target Comet 9P/Tempel 1 with HiVIS

High resolution spectropolarimetry of the Deep Impact target, comet 9P/ Tempel 1, was performed during the impact event on July 4th, 2005 with the HiVIS Spectropolarimeter and the AEOS 3.67m telescope on Haleakala, Maui. We observed atypical polarization spectra that changed significantly in the few hours after the impact. The polarization of scattered light as a function of wavelength is very ...

Temperature of the Nucleus of Comet Tempel

Introduction: The Deep Impact spacecraft (DI) encountered comet 9P/Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005 and observed it with several instruments. In particular, we obtained infrared spectra of the nucleus with the HRI-IR spectrometer in the wavelength range of 15μm. From these spectra, we derived the first temperature map of a comet nucleus. The data were taken before impact, with a maximum resolution of ~...
