چکیده

The loss probability of bursts in an optical burst switching (OBS) network tends to be proportional to the number of hops between the burst’s ingress and egress switches because no buffers are implemented for the data bursts at the core switches. This causes unfairness for multi-hop bursts. We propose a preemption scheme, called hop based preemption (HBP), in order to resolve the unfairness issues in OBS networks. In our scheme, a burst that has traveled through many nodes, but will travel through fewer nodes to arrive at a destination can preempt a channel from other scheduled bursts. We evaluated the performance of the HBP in simulated NSF and ARPA networks. The numerical results presented in this paper show that the HBP reduces unfairness for multi-hop bursts in OBS networks.

Enhancing Fairness in OBS Networks

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a promising solution for all optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks. It combines the benefits of both Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and Optical Circuit Switching (OCS). In this switching, data are transmitted in the form of bursts. Fairness is the main constraint in high-performance OBS network. In order to improve the fairness, a method known ...

Dynamic Burst Ordering for Burst-Cluster Transmission to Improve Fairness in OBS Networks

In hop-based burst-cluster transmission, multiple bursts are assembled simultaneously and sorted from the smallest number of hops to the largest one. By doing so, the burst loss probability for a large number of hops decreases, improving fairness. However, in mesh networks, the amount of traffic on each link is not necessarily the same, and hence degrades the performance of hop-based burst-clus...

Intermediate-Hop Preemption to Improve Fairness in Optical Burst Switching Networks

In optical burst switching (OBS) networks, burst with different numbers of hops experience unfairness in terms of the burst loss probability. In this paper, we propose a preemptive scheme based on the number of transit hops in OBS networks. In our proposed scheme, preemption is performed with two thresholds; one is for the total number of hops of a burst and the other is for the number of trans...

Improving fairness in optical-burst-switching networks

Approaches for dealing with the beat-down unfairness problem have been mainly limited to electronic packet-switching networks. We investigate two methods for alleviating this problem in optical-burst-switching (OBS) networks. When OBS is used with just-in-time or just-enough-time scheduling, the control packet transmitted ahead of the data burst may fail to secure a free channel, causing the da...

Improving throughput and effective utilization in OBS networks

This paper considers two important performance measures that have not received much attention in performance studies of optical burst switching (OBS) networks. The first is the so-called effective utilization which is the proportion of link capacity used by bursts that eventually reach their destinations. The second considers the throughput of individual source-destination pairs that may indica...
