چکیده

Voice in its inherent nature is variable. It is natural to use the VBR class for voice, and transmit voice in its bursty form. On an average, human voice has an speech activity factor of about 42%. This allows us to multiplex a lot of voice sources together. We study the degradation in voice quality under various scheduling policies for VBR voice. Our simulations showed that it is desirable to keep the total VBR-voice load to about 50% of the total link capacity, in order to maintain good quality voice. The remaining link capacity could then be filled up by data. ****************************************************************** Source: Jayaraman Iyer, Raj Jain, Sohail Munir Department of CIS, The Ohio State University (and NASA) 395 Dreese lab, 2015 Neil Ave, Columbus, OH 43210-1277 Phone: 614-292-3989, Fax: 614-292-2911, Email:{jiyer,jain}@cse.wustl.edu Sudhir Dixit Nokia Research Center 3 Burlington Woods Dr., Suite 250 Burlington, MA 01803 Phone: 617-238-4915, Email: [email protected] *******************************************************************

An Analytical Model to Compare AAL2 with a Prebuffered TDM-Based Multiplexing System to Support VBR Voice Connections over ATM

Despite the spread of multimedia applications, voice will still account for most of the overall traffic in telecommunications networks in the near future, as it did in the past. For this kind of traffic it has been observed that if one ATM VCC is assigned to only one source, too high delays to fill the whole 48-byte ATM-cell payload, or high bandwidth wastes if an ATM cell is partially assigned...

A Simulation Study of Using ER Feedback Control to Transport Compressed Video over ATM Networks

Transporting video over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks has been an active area of research. The Variable Bit rate (VBR) service in ATM networks is primarily designed and used for real time application like compressed voice and video. Due to compressed video is inherently bursty, the bandwidth could not be efficiently utilized. The explicit rate (ER) flow control designed for Availabl...

The Performance of TCP Over ATM ABR and UBR Services

Xiangrong CAI {[email protected]} This is a survey paper on the performance of TCP over ATM ABR and UBR services. Using throughput and fairness as our performance metrics, the effect of the following factors to the performance of TCP over ATM ABR and UBR is discussed here: (1)the switch dropping policies when overflow happens(simple discard, Tail Drop, Drop From Front, Early Packet Drop, P...

ATM Forum Document Number: ATM_Forum/96-1294 ************************************************************************ Title: Performance of TCP over ABR on ATM backbone and with various VBR traffic patterns

We extend our earlier study of buffer requirements of TCP over ABR in two directions. First, we study the performance of TCP over ABR in an ATM backbone. On the backbone, the TCP queues are at the edge router and not inside the ATM network. The router requires buffer equal to the sum of the receiver window sizes of the participating TCP connections. Second, we introduce various patterns of VBR ...

A Finite Buffer Scheduling Scheme with Statistical Guarantee for Vbr Traffic in Atm Networks

Future ATM networks will support real-time voice and video services and we need to guarantee cell transfer delay and cell loss probability to launch such services. The Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheme is a suitable service scheduling scheme for these services since it has been proven that it can minimize the number of late cells by assigning deadlines to the cells. However, the EDF scheme c...
