Human embryonic stem cell lines generated without embryo destruction.

چکیده
Already in 2006 the group of Irina Klimanskaya / Robert Lanza had published a controversially discussed paper on the generation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) from cells that had been obtained by blastomere biopsy. Title and abstract of that paper suggested that removal of one or only few cells from an embryo could be sufficient, and that the original embryo might survive undamaged, so that this procedure might avoid the ethically problematrical embryo destruction. However, that paper was critizised because it had indeed not directly demonstrated that embryos survived, and because cells had been combined for culturing.

Benefiting from 'evil': an incipient moral problem in human stem cell research.
When does benefiting from others' wrongdoing effectively make one a moral accomplice in their evil deeds? If stem cell research lives up to its therapeutic promise, this question (which has previously cropped up in debates over fetal tissue research or the use of Nazi research data) is likely to become a central one for opponents of embryo destruction. I argue that benefiting from wrongdoing is...
متن کاملMaintenance of horse embryonic stem cells in different conditions
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are originally derived from the ICM of blastocysts and are characterized by their ability to self-renew and their pluripotencies. Only a few reports have been published on ESC isolations and line establishment in animals, even fewer in horses. However, it is still important to isolate equine ESCs for animal biotechnology and therapeutic applications. In the present s...
متن کاملFacts about Stem Cells and Importance of Them
Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and can divide (through mitosis) to produce more stem cells. They are found in multicellular organisms. In mammals, there are two broad types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, which are isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, and adult stem cells, which are found in various tissues. In ad...
متن کاملDifferentiation of human embryonic stem cells into neurons
Human embryonic stem (ES) cells are undifferentiated pluripotent cells derived from the inner cell mass of blastocyst stage embryos. These unique cell lines have the potential to form virtually any cell type in the body and can be propagated in vitro indefinitely in an undifferentiated state. These cells are capable of forming embryoid bodies (EB) that contain cells from all three embryonic lin...
متن کاملEthical Issues in Stem Cell Transplantation
There is great interest worldwide in discovering and developing a permanent source of tissues which would be capable of generating any cell type and which would avoid the problem of transplant rejection. Stem cells are cells that can specialize into the many different cells found in the human body. The ethical objections concerning stem cells have focused primarily on their source. Human embry...
