PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ALLANTOIC AND AMNIOTIC FLUIDS OF T H E CHICK II. HYDROGEN Iol~I CONCENTRATION BY PAUL ANDREW WALKER

چکیده
The importance of the hydrogen ion concentration of the external medium of cells, tissues, and organisms has long been recognized. In the case of the developing chick, the external medium is represented by the amniotic fluid, and since the allantois soon surrounds the other components of the egg, its contained fluid must also be considered as a part of the embryo's external environment. This question of the hydrogen ion concentration of these extra-embryonic fluids has already received some attention, notably in the work of Aggazzotti (1913), Buytendijk and Woerdeman (1927), and Yamada (1933), but the results of these investigations do not agree, in part perhaps because the accuracy of the various techniques employed is open to question. Accordingly, it was considered desirable to reexamine this problem, using the glass electrode technique, which is admirably suited for use with small quantities of fluid. Haugaard (1934) further points out that the glass electrode can also be used in work with solutions containing carbon dioxide (as do both fluids under investigation) which can only be measured with the hydrogen electrode by the use of special devices.

متن کاملPhysical Properties of the Allantoic and Amniotic Fluids of the Chick
1. The specific conductance of the allantoic and amniotic fluids of the developing chick has been determined over the period of incubation between the 7th and 19th days. 2. Changes in this property have been related to changes in the chemical composition of these two fluids. 3. These conductance values are of importance in that they show the relation between ionized and un-ionized materials pre...
متن کاملDevelopmental changes in amniotic and allantoic fluid insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and -II concentrations of avian embryos.
In the literature, IGFs in the developing embryo are usually determined by blood serum concentrations. For this study, IGF-I/-II was quantified in the amniotic and allantoic fluids of fertile commercial broiler chicken (Gallus domesticus) (n=222), Pekin duck (Anas platyrhyncha) (n=250), and turkey (Meleagridis gallopavo) eggs (n= 200) during incubation. Amniotic and allantoic fluids were collec...
متن کاملBiochemical Profile of Ovine Amniotic and Allantoic Fluids
Foetal fluids are important in preventing mechanical shock to the developing foetus during entire gestation. Amniotic and allantoic fluids are actively involved in constant exchange of biochemical substance between foetus and maternal circulation. Hence the knowledge regarding changes in the composition of the foetal fluid is important for understanding foetal metabolism and diagnosis of pathol...
متن کاملConjugated and unconjugated oestrogens in fetal and maternal fluids of the cow throughout pregnancy.
The changes in concentration of oestrone, oestradiol (-17alpha and -17beta), oestrone sulphate and the oestradiol sulphates have been measured in allantoic and amniotic fluids and in maternal peripheral plasma throughout gestation. Oestrone sulphate was the major oestrone present in all of the fluids. It was measurable in allantoic fluid before Day 52 and reached a peak concentration of 475 ng/...
