چکیده

Robots are increasingly tested in socially assistive scenarios. Future applications range from dieting, coaching, tutoring to autism therapy. In order to have a successful interaction with an artificial system, these systems need to have an interactional motivation model of how to assist users and encourage them to keep on with the task. In previous work, we have investigated how to build such a model for a specific scenario (e.g. indoor cycling). In this paper we want to show how to advance this model to be generalizable for other sport scenarios like rowing or bodyweight training. Therefore, we describe our framework for coordinating interaction scenarios with socially assistive robots.

Motivational Effects of Acknowledging Feedback from a Socially Assistive Robot

Preventing diseases of affluence is one of the major challenges for our future society. Recently, robots have been introduced as support for people on dieting or rehabilitation tasks. In our current work, we are investigating how the companionship and acknowledgement of a socially assistive robot (SAR) can influence the user to persist longer on a planking task. We conducted a 2 (acknowledgemen...

Roles of Robots in Socially Assistive Applications

Socially assistive robots help people through social, rather than physical, interactions. While physically assistive robots act by physically manipulating a user’s body, socially assistive robots provide help through tutoring, therapy, home assistance and other tasks. For example, tutoring robots can offer struggling students additional one-on-one assistance outside of the classroom. For such r...

Reflections on the Design Challenges Prompted by Affect-Aware Socially Assistive Robots

The rising interest in socially assistive robotics is, at least in part, stemmed by the aging population around the world. A lot of research and interest has gone into insuring the safety of these robots. However, little has been done to consider the necessary role of emotion in these robots and the potential ethical implications of having affect-aware socially assistive robots. In this chapter...

Experiments in Socially Guided Machine Learning: Understanding How Humans Teach

In Socially Guided Machine Learning we explore the ways in which machine learning can more fully take advantage of natural human interaction. In this work we are studying the role real-time human interaction plays in training assistive robots to perform new tasks. We describe an experimental platform, Sophie’s World, and present descriptive analysis of human teaching behavior found in a user st...

Interaction Between Children with ASDs and a Socially Assistive Robot: A Preliminary Analysis

Socially assistive robotics (SAR) holds particular promise for use in applications with children. Robots naturally appeal to children’s fondness for imaginary play, and the robot’s use of socially appropriate behaviors can help to improve learning outcomes. Such robots provide the replicability and potential for broad deployment of other technologies, while also addressing the need for social i...
