TEMPLETON, GORDON H., AND Louxs R. NARDTZZI. Elastic and viscous stifness of the canine left ventricle. J. Ap pl. Ph ysiol. 36 ( I ) : 123-I 27. 1974.-Elastic and viscous stiffness of canine left ventricles was measured continuously over the entire cardiac cycle. These mechanical properties were determined from the sinusoidally varying portion of the left ventricular pressure induced by an externally applied sinusoidal volume change with a constant peak amplitude of 0.5 ml and a frequency of 22 Hz. The sinusoidal pressure perturbations varied during the cardiac cycle both in peak amplitude and in the time of occurrence of the peak amplitude with respect to the volume changes that produced them. Determinations were made of ventricular stiffness, or elastance, which is defined as the ratio of the peak change in the pressure perturbations to the peak change in volume. Stiffness and the time difference between the occurrence of the peak volumetric perturbation and the corresponding peak of the pressure perturbation were used to calculate the elastic and viscous components of ventricular stiffness. These elastic and viscous components of stiffness increased proportionally with ventricular pressure, and the percentage change in elastic stiffness from diastole to systole was greater than that of viscous stiffness.

Assessment of passive elastic stiffness for isolated heart muscle and the intact heart.

A sensitive method was developed for detecting stiffness changes in the left ventricle. Stress-strain relationships (cr—e) were obtained in the form do~/de = ko~ + c from published studies on eight normal canine hearts, five infarcted canine hearts, and seven isolated cat papillary muscles. Utilizing pressure-volume relationships, the elastic stiffness (dcr/de) and the stiffness constant (k) we...

Influence of temperature on the mechanical properties of cardiac muscle.

The influence of temperature on contractile performance, total myocardial stiffness, and the elastic and viscous components of stiffness was studied in intact hearts (dog) and isolated cardiac muscle (cat). In 12 dogs on whole-heart bypass, stiffness (AP/AV) was determined by inducing sinusoidal 0.5-ml volume changes in paced, isovolumically contracting left ventricles and measuring the resulta...

Mechanical properties of human pericardium. Differences in viscoelastic response when compared with canine pericardium.

Whereas most experiments on the mechanical function of the pericardium have been performed on dogs, very little is known about the applicability of those data to humans. To examine the tensile viscoelastic properties of fresh human pericardium, we have used the methods from our previous study of canine pericardium. Although the mechanical responses of canine and human pericardium were qualitati...

Diastolic pressure-volume relationship in the canine left ventricle.

Analysis of the passive pressure-volume filling curve of the left ventricle demonstrates that heart size and ventricular geometry exert major effects on the pressure-volume curve in the absence of changes in intrinsic muscle stiffness. Because the pressure-volume relationship is curvilinear, both quantitative and qualitative comparison of pressure-volume curves from different hearts is difficul...

Passive properties of canine left ventricle: diastolic stiffness and restoring forces.

Left ventricular (LV) diastolic pressure-volume (P-V) relations arise from a complex interplay of active decay of force (i.e., relaxation), passive elastic myocardial properties, and time-varying inflow across the mitral orifice. This study was designed to quantify the passive properties of the intact ventricle and the effects of elastic recoil by separating filling from relaxation with a metho...
