Yeast Survive by Hedging Their Bets
نویسنده
چکیده
A new experimental approach reveals a bet hedging strategy in unstressed, clonal yeast cells, whereby they adopt a range of growth states that correlate with expression of a trehalose-synthesis regulator and predict resistance to future stress.

متن کاملBet Hedging in Yeast by Heterogeneous, Age-Correlated Expression of a Stress Protectant
Genetically identical cells grown in the same culture display striking cell-to-cell heterogeneity in gene expression and other traits. A crucial challenge is to understand how much of this heterogeneity reflects the noise tolerance of a robust system and how much serves a biological function. In bacteria, stochastic gene expression results in cell-to-cell heterogeneity that might serve as a bet...
متن کاملNon-genetic individuality in Escherichia coli motor switching.
By analyzing 30 min, high-resolution recordings of single Escherichia coli flagellar motors in the physiological regime, we show that two main properties of motor switching-the mean clockwise and mean counter-clockwise interval durations-vary significantly. When we represent these quantities on a two-dimensional plot for several cells, the data do not fall on a one-dimensional curve, as expecte...
متن کاملHedging bets with correlated quantum strategies
This paper studies correlations among independently administered hypothetical tests of a simple interactive type, and demonstrates that correlations arising in quantum information theoretic variants of these tests can exhibit a striking non-classical behavior. When viewed in a game-theoretic setting, these correlations are suggestive of a perfect form of hedging, where the risk of a loss in one...
متن کاملRational Bar Bets
Various \no trade" theorems suggest that rational agents who start from a common prior should not make speculative bets with each other. To support speculation, market microstructure models typically invoke agents with dynamic hedging demands. Thus a \bar bet", a simple bet on a risk-irrelevant topic negotiated in an informal but non-private social context, seems irrational. We might, however, ...
