چکیده

Based on a two-step laboratory test including biodegradation and adsorption, it is possible to derive a prognosis of the behaviour of organic compounds during riverbank filtration and to prioritise the substances with regard to drinking water quality. It is shown for aromatic amines, used as an example of organics found in River Elbe water, Germany, how the simulation methods provide basic information about rate constants of biological degradation and adsorption equilibrium constants under conditions that are as realistic as possible. Biodegradation of nitroanilines and higher chlorinated anilines is relatively slow and adsorption onto the sandy aquifer material is weak. Accordingly, occurrence of these compounds in the production wells of the waterworks cannot be excluded. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Natural attenuation of priority and emerging contaminants during river bank filtration and artificial recharge

The fate of various emerging contaminants as well as priority pollutants from the European Union Water Framework directive was examined along a complex combination of natural and engineered processes used to produce drinking water downstream of a major metropolitan area. The sampling points examined comprised Seine river water downstream of the Paris area, water from a primary well after bank f...

A Simple and Effective Protocol for One-Pot Diazotization-Iodination of Aromatic Amines by Acidic Ionic Liquid [H-NMP]HSO4 at Room Temperature

A simple and efficient one-pot method for the preparation of aromatic iodides has been developed by sequential diazotization–iodination of aromatic amines employing sodium nitrite and sodium iodide in the presence of acidic ionic liquid N-methyl-2-pyrrolidonum hydrosulfate ([H-NMP]HSO4). The diazonium salts that are formed by this ionic liquid are stable at room temperature and r...

Removal of Coliform, Suspended Solids, UV254 and Colour Using Zeolite and Activated Carbon in Riverbank Filtration System

River bank filtratio filtration (RBF) is one of the novel water abstraction alternatives to tackle poor water quality problem in Malaysia. This study was conducted to investigate the potential use of zeolite and activated carbon as filter media in the laboratory RBF system. Characteristics of the materials were first determined using the surface analyzer and X-ray fluorescence method. Filter co...

Impacts of extreme flooding on riverbank filtration water quality.

Riverbank filtration schemes form a significant component of public water treatment processes on a global level. Understanding the resilience and water quality recovery of these systems following severe flooding is critical for effective water resources management under potential future climate change. This paper assesses the impact of floodplain inundation on the water quality of a shallow aqu...
