Use of a Cubic Equation to Predict Surface Tension and Spinodal Limits
نویسنده
چکیده
The very general ShamsundarMurali cubic equation is used to interpolate p-v-T data into the metastable and unstable regions. This y ields a spinodal line that closely matches the homogeneous nucleation limit predicted by an improved kinetic theory. Only the pressure, the saturated liquid and vapor volumes, and the liquid com pressibility at saturation, as well as one compressed liquid data point. are needed to use the cubic equation for the interpolation process. The equation also yields an ac curate prediction of the temperature dependence of surf ace tension when it is substituted in van der Waals'surface tension fo rmula. Thus, by capitalizing on the inherent relation among the p-v-T equation, the spinodal prediction, and the sur face tension all three it is possible to obtain each with high accuracy and minimal experimental data.

Modern thermal processes in the power industry involve ever increasing heat fluxes and rapid transients. Simulating such processes requires accurate thermodynamic properties and correlations that encompass stable as well as metastable states. Here we review the development of cubic equations of state that can be made to yield very accurate thermodynamic properties of liquids in saturation and m...
متن کاملCurvature e ect on the physical boundary of metastable states in liquids
The physical boundary of metastable states, the kinetic spinodal, is introduced as a locus where the lifetime of metastable state becomes shorter than a relaxation time to local equilibrium. The theory does not contain any adjustable parameters. If the surface tension is known, the kinetic spinodal is completely determined by the equation of state only. The curvature e ect on the surface tensio...

The fluctuation theory of homogeneous nucleation was applied for calculating the physical boundary of metastable states, the kinetic spinodal, in supercooled D2O and D2O1H2O mixtures. The kinetic spinodal in our approach is completely determined by the surface tension and equation of state of the supercooled liquid. We developed a crossover equation of state for supercooled D2O, which predicts ...
