Variability of speech rhythm in synchronous speech
نویسندگان
چکیده
Speakers are able to speak in synchrony to another speaker or to a recording of another speaker. The present research studied whether and, if yes, speakers change their speech rhythm when synchronizing to another speaker. We developed a measure (SRratio) which monitors on a scale between 0 and 1 whether the durational characteristics of a speaker’s synchronous speech are closer to his/her own read speech or closer to the characteristics of the speech of the speaker he/she is synchronizing to. Four speakers (synchronization speakers) synchronizing to twelve recorded sentences produced by four other speakers (target speakers) were studied. The durational characteristics we analyzed were %V and nPVIv. Results for SRratio suggest that complex processes are going on with main effects for synchronization speakers and target speakers and interaction of the two factors. Exploring Pragmalinguistic and Sociopragmatic Variability in Speech Act Production of L2 Learners and Native Speakers
The pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic aspects of language use vary across different situations, languages, and cultures. The separation of these two facets of language use can help to map out the socio-cultural norms and conventions as well as the linguistic forms and strategies that underlie the pragmatic performance of different language speakers in a variety of target language use situatio...
متن کاملCorrelation between Auditory Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Background: Variability in speech performance is a major concern for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Spectral resolution is an important acoustic component in speech perception. Considerable variability and limitations of spectral resolution in children with CIs may lead to individual differences in speech performance. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between auditory ...
متن کاملPersian Phone Recognition Using Acoustic Landmarks and Neural Network-based variability compensation methods
Speech recognition is a subfield of artificial intelligence that develops technologies to convert speech utterance into transcription. So far, various methods such as hidden Markov models and artificial neural networks have been used to develop speech recognition systems. In most of these systems, the speech signal frames are processed uniformly, while the information is not evenly distributed ...
متن کاملThe Timing of Accentual Phrases in Read and Spontaneous Speech: Data from Acadian French
In recent years, researchers have developed rhythm metrics to capture patterns of timing in speech. Based on acoustic measures of vocalic and consonantal intervals, these metrics focus on variability in the durations of these segmental intervals; certain metrics (pairwise variability measures) measure the variability of pairs of immediately adjacent intervals while other metrics (interval measu...
متن کاملValidating Acoustic Measures of Speech Rhythm for Second Language Acquisition
This paper reports research investigating the validity of using Pairwise Variability Indexes in research into the second language acquisition of speech rhythm. Findings determined that 1) expert native-speakers rate non-native speaker rhythm based on a common factor, and 2) part of that common factor can be accounted for by the use of vocalic pairwise variability. It was concluded that the PVI ...
