چکیده

Simultaneously acquired EEG and BOLD (Blood Oxygenation level dependent contrast) MRI allowed to study on line the neurophysiological changes in rat brain during epileptic seizures. MRI and EEG data were acquired with a specially designed high quality MR RF-antenna with incorporated non-invasive carbon EEG electrodes. The problem of severe pollution of the EEG data due to MR gradient switching during simultaneous EEG/MRI acquisitions was solved by a specially designed automated effective filtering algorithm. We measured continuously EEG data, and T2-weighted coronal MRI sections of rat brain before and after the injection of pentetrazol (43mg/(kg body weight) PTZ; convulsive dose 97%), an epilepsy inductor. In this way, we could correlate the abnormalities in the EEG traces, with changes in the MRI BOLD signal intensities. Immediately after PTZ induction and before epileptic discharges were observed on the EEG traces, the cortex displayed an increase in BOLD signal intensity (increase in blood flow). Much later and correlated with epileptic discharges on the EEG traces, the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei showed an increased BOLD signal while the BOLD signal intensity dropped in the entire brain, except for the hypothalamus. The decreased BOLD signal reflected general hypoxia and subsequent ischemia as a consequence of the sustained depolarization of neurons during the seizure.

Alterations of the electroencephalogram sub-bands amplitude during focal seizures in the pilocarpine model of epilepsy

Introduction: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common and drug resistant epilepsy in adults. Due to behavioral, morphologic and electrographic similarities, pilocarpine model of epilepsy best resembles TLE. This study was aimed at determination of the changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) sub-bands amplitude during focal seizures in the pilocarpine model of epilepsy. Analysis of thes...

An open-source hardware and software system for acquisition and real-time processing of electrophysiology during high field MRI.

Simultaneous recording of electrophysiology and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a technique of growing importance in neuroscience. Rapidly evolving clinical and scientific requirements have created a need for hardware and software that can be customized for specific applications. Hardware may require customization to enable a variety of recording types (e.g., electroencephalogra...

EEG AND BOLD-CONTRAST fMRI IN BRAIN Cerebrovascular reactivity, suppression of neuronal activity, global and local brain injury

The purpose of the present study was to gain more insight into the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD)-contrast functional MRI (fMRI) in the brain and its connection to EEG, both in global and local scales of their temporal and spatial relations. BOLD signal changes were studied during hyperventilation (HV) induced EEG reactivity of intermittent rhythmic delta activity (IRDA). The BOLD signal i...

Constructing Carbon Fiber Motion-Detection Loops for Simultaneous EEG–fMRI

One of the most significant impediments to high-quality EEG recorded in an MRI scanner is subject motion. Availability of motion artifact sensors can substantially improve the quality of the recorded EEG. In the study of epilepsy, it can also dramatically increase the confidence that one has in discriminating true epileptiform activity from artifact. This is due both to the reduction in artifac...
