This chapter introduces the concept of Genetic Programming (GP) and its application to the “growth” of an artificial embryo. Genetic Programming (GP) is the application of the Genetic Algorithm [5,6] to building (evolving) functional systems which are too complex in their dynamics or their interactions to be prespecified or analyzed in detail. Such systems can be built, but (probably) not understood.
