Laser Projection Augmented Reality System for Computer Assisted Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
A general-purpose augmented reality apparatus was developed. The system uses rapidly scanned lasers to display information directly onto the patient using the patient as a ‘‘projection screen’’. The device is also capable of measuring the location of projected laser spots with a 3D camera to ensure that the display is accurate, to apply corrections to the projection path and to assist in registration. The projection system has its own Application Programmer’s Interface (API) and is a stand-alone add-on unit to any host computer system. An initial host application was developed to demonstrate the new unit. Fiducials representing vertices along a proposed craniotomy were embedded into a plastic skull and a projection path was calculated. A feedback-based optimization of the plan was performed by comparing the measurement taken by the camera of these coordinates. The optimized plan was projected onto the skull. On average, the projection deviated by approximately 1 mm from the plan. Possible applications include identification of critical anatomical structures, visualization of preplanned paths and targets, and telesurgery or teleconsultation applications. Pico Lantern: A Pick-up Projector for Augmented Reality in Laparoscopic Surgery
The Pico Lantern is proposed as a new tool for guidance in laparoscopic surgery. Its miniaturized design allows it to be picked up by a laparoscopic tool during surgery and tracked directly by the endoscope. By using laser projection, different patterns and annotations can be projected onto the tissue surface. The first explored application is surface reconstruction. The absolute error for surf...
متن کاملAugmented Virtuality for Arthroscopic Knee Surgery
This paper describes a computer system to visualize the location and alignment of an arthroscope using augmented virtuality. A 3D computer model of the patient's joint (from CT) is shown, along with a model of the tracked arthroscopic probe and the projection of the camera image onto the virtual joint. A user study, using plastic bones instead of live patients, was made to determine the effecti...
متن کاملApplication of Augmented Reality to Laparoscopic Surgery
The usefulness and feasibility of an augmented reality visualization system for laparoscopic surgery is examined. This technology could enable physicians to see data, such as medical images, as well as the patient’s 3-D anatomy, in the context of the patient rather than viewing a 2-D video monitor. Three new results will be presented: 1. A study whose chief findings were that augmented reality ...
متن کاملClassification Space for Augmented Surgery, an Augmented Reality Case Study
One of the recent design goals in Human Computer Interaction has been to extend the sensorymotor capabilities of computer systems to combine the real and the virtual in order to assist the user in his environment. Such systems are called Augmented Reality (AR). Although AR systems are becoming more prevalent we still do not have a clear understanding of this interaction paradigm. In this paper ...
متن کاملStereoscopic augmented reality system for computer-assisted surgery
A first architecture for an augmented reality system in computer-assisted surgery is presented in this paper. Like in ”X-ray vision” systems, a stereoscopic overlay is visually superimposed on the patient. The main purpose of our approach is user-friendliness for the surgeon: no additive wearing equipment is required. Registration, rigid bodies location and 3D volume computation are proved to r...
