چکیده
A 33 year old man developed bilateral leg weakness two years following radiotherapy to the pelvis and lower abdomen for the treatment of a seminoma. Clinical and electrophysiological examinations and nerve and muscle biopsies suggest that this is an example of either post-irradiation myelopathy selectively affecting the anterior horn cells in the lower spinal cord or a purely motor lumbo-sacral radiculopathy.

Hereditary canine spinal muscular atrophy: an animal model of motor neuron disease.
Motor neuron diseases selectively produce degeneration and death of motor neurons; the pathogenesis of these disorders and the specificity for this population of neurons are unknown. Hereditary Canine Spinal Muscular Atrophy produces a lower motor neuron disease which is clinically and pathologically similar to human motor neuron disease: motor neurons dysfunction and degenerate. The canine mod...
متن کاملAutoimmunity to beta IV spectrin in paraneoplastic lower motor neuron syndrome.
Paraneoplastic neurological disorders may result from autoimmunity directed against antigens shared by the affected neurons and the associated cancer cells. We have recently reported the case of a woman with breast cancer and paraneoplastic lower motor neuron syndrome whose serum contained autoantibodies directed against axon initial segments and nodes of Ranvier of myelinated axons, including ...
متن کاملSensory neuron degeneration in familial Kugelberg-Welander disease.
A 53 year old man developed symptoms of motor neuron disease in childhood. There was a family history of a similar disorder and it was felt to represent a form of Kugelberg-Welander disease. In addition to the motor deficits, sensory abnormalities in his legs were documented during life. Autopsy revealed anterior horn cell loss throughout the length of the spinal cord, with preservation of the ...
متن کاملFacial Motor Neuron Excitability in Hemifacial Spasm: A Facial MEP Study.
INTRODUCTION Hemifacial spasm (HFS) may be due to peripheral axon ephapsis or central motor neuron hyperexcitability. Low facial motor evoked potential (MEP) thresholds or MEP responses to single pulse stimulation (normally multipulse stimulation is needed) may support the central hypothesis. METHODS We retrospectively compared response thresholds for facial MEPs in 65 patients undergoing sur...
متن کاملClinical problems of motor system disease.
This prologue to a symposium of research studies on motor mechanisms is a general commentary by a clinical neurologist. The vast extent and intricacy of modern basic neurological scientific knowledge presents a rather bewildering challenge to reasonable clinical application. In some degree this is being handled by complex and diverse neurological subspecialization. It is recalled that many past...
