On the dynamics of laminar-turbulent patterns in plane Couette flow
نویسنده
چکیده
Plane Couette flow presents a regular oblique turbulent-laminar pattern over a wide range of Reynolds numbers R between the globally stable base flow profile at low R < Rg and a uniformly turbulent regime at sufficiently large R > Rt. The numerical simulations that we have performed on a pattern displaying a wavelength modulation show a relaxation of that modulation in agreement with what one would expect from a standard approach in terms of dissipative structures in extended geometry though the structuration develops on a turbulent background. Some consequences are discussed.

Mean Flow of Turbulent - Laminar Patterns in Plane Couette Flow By DWIGHT BARKLEY
A turbulent-laminar banded pattern in plane Couette flow is studied numerically. This pattern is statistically steady, is oriented obliquely to the streamwise direction, and has a very large wavelength relative to the gap. The mean flow, averaged in time and in the homogeneous direction, is analysed. The flow in the quasi-laminar region is not the linear Couette profile, but results from a non-...

The transition to turbulence in pipe and plane Couette flow differs from the better understood situation of Taylor-Couette or Rayleigh-Bénard flow in that the laminar profile is stable against infinitesimal perturbations for all Reynolds numbers. Moreover, even when turbulent flow is established, it can spontaneously return to laminar flow. These observations are compatible with the formation o...

متن کاملThe dynamics of transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow
In plane Couette flow, the incompressible fluid between two plane parallel walls is driven by the motion of those walls. The laminar solution, in which the streamwise velocity varies linearly in the wall-normal direction, is known to be linearly stable at all Reynolds numbers (Re). Yet, in both experiments and computations, turbulence is observed for Re & 360. In this article, we show that when...

The Galerkin method is used to derive a realistic model of plane Couette flow in terms of partial differential equations governing the space-time dependence of the amplitude of a few cross-stream modes. Numerical simulations show that it reproduces the globally sub-critical behavior typical of this flow. In particular, the statistics of turbulent transients at decay from turbulent to laminar fl...
