Spatial Spread of Rabies in China∗

چکیده
The reported data on human rabies in Mainland China in the past 10 years demonstrate that the number of counties with human rabies cases has increased dramatically and the disease has spread from southern provinces to northern provinces. The aim of this paper is to study how the movement of dogs impacts the spatial spread of rabies and to find effective strategies for controlling rabies. We firstly construct a reaction-diffusion model for dogs and humans and obtain the minimal wave speed. Then we consider the existence of traveling waves and the influences of parameters on human rabies cases and the minimal wave speed by numerical simulations. Lastly, we discuss the local stability of the endemic equilibrium. Our analysis indicates that dog movement leads to the traveling wave of dog and human rabies and has a large influence on the minimal wave speed. Thus restricting the movement of dogs, in particular the exposed and infected dogs, is an effective way to prevent the spatial spread of rabies.

Geographical Analysis of the Distribution and Spread of Human Rabies in China from 2005 to 2011
BACKGROUND Rabies is a significant public health problem in China in that it records the second highest case incidence globally. Surveillance data on canine rabies in China is lacking and human rabies notifications can be a useful indicator of areas where animal and human rabies control could be integrated. Previous spatial epidemiological studies lacked adequate spatial resolution to inform ta...

Human rabies was first recorded in ancient China in about 556 BC and is still one of the major public-health problems in China. From 1950 to 2015, 130,494 human rabies cases were reported in Mainland China with an average of 1977 cases per year. It is estimated that 95% of these human rabies cases are due to dog bites. The purpose of this article is to provide a review about the models, results...
متن کاملCurrent status of canine rabies in China.
The number of human rabies cases acquired from dog bites constitutes a high proportion of the total rabies cases in China, although the number of human rabies cases has gradually decreased in recent years. The pivotal role of dogs in the spread of rabies indicates that controlling and preventing canine rabies could be a key step in eradicating human rabies in China. The primary aims of this rev...
متن کاملThe Spatiotemporal Expansion of Human Rabies and Its Probable Explanation in Mainland China, 2004-2013
BACKGROUND Human rabies is a significant public health concern in mainland China. However, the neglect of rabies expansion and scarce analyses of the dynamics have made the spatiotemporal spread pattern of human rabies and its determinants being poorly understood. METHODS We collected geographic locations and timeline of reported human rabies cases, rabies sequences and socioeconomic variable...
متن کاملModeling the Geographic Spread of Rabies in China
In order to investigate how the movement of dogs affects the geographically inter-provincial spread of rabies in Mainland China, we propose a multi-patch model to describe the transmission dynamics of rabies between dogs and humans, in which each province is regarded as a patch. In each patch the submodel consists of susceptible, exposed, infectious, and vaccinated subpopulations of both dogs a...
