A Chemical Investigation of Keratin and Carcinomas Deriving from Rabbit

چکیده
In 1933, Shope (14) described a virus-induced papilloma occurring naturally in the cottontailS rabbit (genus Sylvilagus) and transmissible to the domestic rabbit (genus Oryctolagus). Later, Rous and Beard (13) found that the experimentally in duced papillomas in domestic rabbits often pro gressed to carcinomas; and Syverton and Berry (16,17)observedthesamephenomenon incotton tail rabbits. Because of its possible significance for the pathogenesis of mammalian cancers in@general, this virus-induced papilloma-to-carcinoma se quence aroused wide interest and has been the sub ject of numerous investigations. An outstanding feature of the Shope papilloma .istheproduction ofexcessive amounts ofkeratin ized epithelium, which may develop into enormous epithelial horns, sharply demarcated from the Un derlying tissue.t The present communication con cerns some of the chemical properties of this “keratin― and also of carcinomas deriving from the papillomas in cottontail rabbits. Keratinization, or cornification, which reflects the ultimate natural alterative change in super ficially situated structures of ectodermal origin, yields a wide variety of hard anuclear entities, such as horns, hoofs, nails, hair, the outer layers of

متن کاملKeratin nanoparticles: synthesis and application for Cu(II) removal
A straightforward procedure to synthesize keratin nanoparticles (KNP) from chicken feathers was introduced. The characterization of the synthesized nanoparticles was done using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The FTIR analysis revealed no significant chemical change after...
متن کاملSpecific quantification of mouse and human keratin proteins by radioimmunoassay.
Mouse epidermal keratin proteins were purified and labelled with 125I by chemical techniques. A radioimmunoassay method was established with a rabbit antibody elicited against the mouse keratin. This assay method was utilized to quantify keratin proteins of mouse and human epidermal extracts, both from intact tissues and cells in culture. As little as 30 ng of mouse keratin (0.5 pmol) was quant...
متن کاملObservations on the Relation of the Virus Caus- Ing Rabbit Papillomas to the Cancers Deriving Therefrom I. the Influence of Tiie Host Sp~.czes and of Tiie Pathogenic Activity and Concentration of the Virus
The carcinomas deriving from the papillomas induced with a virus in domestic rabbits (1) have this virus as their primary cause. The present paper is concerned with the carcinogenic effect of various strains of the virus,--meaning thereby the infective materials procured from the "spontaneous" papillomas of different cottontail rabbits,--and with the influence of the concentration of the inocul...
متن کاملKeratin biosynthesis in normal mouse epithelia and in squamous cell carcinomas. mRNA-dependent alterations of the primary structure of distinct keratin subunits in tumors.
The keratin polypeptide patterns of two murine transplantable squamous cell carcinomas--originally induced by chemical means in the back skin and in the forestomach epithelium--are deficient in high molecular weight keratin subunits (greater than 60 kDa) invariably present in the corresponding normal tissues. In addition, the keratin polypeptide composition within the low molecular weight range...
