چکیده

The model of Mason, Polnaszek, and Freed for ESR-slow-tumbling spectra is extended to the case of NMR line shapes for arbitrary tilt of the internal axis of relatively rapid rotation with respect to the principal axes of the chemical shielding tensor for a decoupled I = 1 / 2 nucleus. The theory is applied to an analysis of 31P NMR spectra from partially hydrated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) molecules over a range of temperature. Generally, very good agreement with experiment is obtained enabling the determination of the rate of the “average” or “effective” internal rotation and the orientation of this “average” axis in the molecule. The basis on which the simple model reflects the spectral effects of the combined internal and overall motions is discussed in detail in an appendix, and the extension to more complex models is outlined,

Evidence for isotropic motion of phospholipids in liver microsomal membranes. A 31P NMR study.

1. The motional properties of phospholipids in bovine and rat liver microsomes and aqueous dispersions of the extracted lipids have been investigated employing 31 P NMR techniques. 2. The 31P NMR spectra obtained from the microsomes indicate that a considerable portion of the constituent phospholipids experience isotropic motion on the NMR timescale (10(-5) s). This is in strong contrast to the...

250-GHz EPR of Nitroxides in the Slow-Motional Regime: Models of Rotational Diffusion

A 250-GHz electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of the slow rotational diffusion of two spin probes in toluene, viz., perdeuterated 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone (PDT) and 3-doxylcholestane (CSL) is presented. EPR spectra were obtained in the slow-motional and near-rigid limit regions, which corresponds to rotational correlation times 1&l0 > TR > 10-6 s. These two probes differ signifi...

NMR of gel and liquid crystalline phospholipids spinning at the 'magic angle'

Recently Chapman et al. have been applying both natural abundance [l-4] and isotopic enrichment [5,6] nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) of ‘H, 2H and 13C nuclei to a study of molecular mobility in both model membrane [ l-3,5] and natural membrane [4,6] systems. It has been established that the line broadening in such (unsonicated) systems is predominently dipolar [2,7] in fields up ...

Bulletin of Magnetic Resonance NMR STUDIES OF MEMBRANE SURFACES

Biological membranes are usually composed of a limited number of phospholipid types, often mixed with other, non-phosphate containing lipids and proteins. Magnetic resonance methods have proved particularly useful in the study of the acyl chain behaviour of* phospholipids in membranes, in particular in the study of how lipids and proteins interact at the molecular level as reviewed by Marsh and...

Centreband-Only Detection of Exchange Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Lateral diffusion of phospholipids is a process essential to membrane function, and can be measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This project will use CODEX (Centerband-Only Detection of Exchange), the most highly-evolved NMR experiment combining magic angle spinning with exchange sensitivity, to measure lateral diffusion. P CODEX NMR measurements were performed on phospholipids in smal...
