چکیده

To develop a practical method of treating boron-containing wastewater, we custom designed two laboratory-scale continuousflow-type hydrothermal mineralization apparatuses. We carried out a hydrothermal treatment using a continuous-flow apparatus, using Ca(OH)2, CaCl2, and both Ca(OH)2 and CaCl2 as mineralizers, under various pH conditions. Our results show that using CaCl2 under optimal pH conditions (pH = approximately 12) allowed for the stable removal of boron from wastewater. One of the precipitates obtained in this process was parasibirskite, which is a natural boron mineral. Finally, because the residual concentration of boron could not be reduced below 10mg/dm3, we propose a realistic boron removal wastewater treatment system incorporating the hydrothermal mineralization method.

Nitrification Treatment of Swine Wastewater Under Cold Temperatures

In addition to N load, cold weather nitrification is an important consideration for stabilized performance of biological processes applied to continuous animal production systems. A winter simulation experiment was conducted in the laboratory to evaluate performance of immobilized bacteria for treatment of swine wastewater under cold weather conditions. Bench fluidized reactors (1.2 L) containi...

Effect of batch vs. continuous mode of operation on microbial desalination cell performance treating municipal wastewater

Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) have  great potential as a cost-effective and green technology for simultaneous water desalination, organic matter removal and energy production. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of a MDC under batch and continuous feeding conditions. Hence, power and current output, coulombic efficiency, electron harvest rate, desalination rate and COD re...

Chromium and phosphorous recovery from polluted water by hydrothermal mineralization

Detoxification of polluted water containing chromium and phosphorous and its resource recovery were investigated by hydrothermal mineralization using Ca(OH)2 or CaCl2 mineralizers. Under the optimum treatment condition for removing chromic acid (at 473 K, for 2 h using CaCl2 mineralizer in an in situ sampling-type autoclave), CrO4 was recovered as CaCrO4 and the concentration in the treated-wat...

Production of electricity during wastewater treatment using a single chamber microbial fuel cell.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been used to produce electricity from different compounds, including acetate, lactate, and glucose. We demonstrate here that it is also possible to produce electricity in a MFC from domestic wastewater, while atthe same time accomplishing biological wastewater treatment (removal of chemical oxygen demand; COD). Tests were conducted using a single chamber microbi...
