چکیده

Speed and traffic volume data are collected on different sections of four lane and six lane roads in three metropolitan cities in India. Speed data are analyzed to fit the statistical distribution to individual vehicle speed data and all vehicles speed data. It is noted that speed data of individual vehicle generally follows a normal distribution but speed data of all vehicle combined at a section of urban road may or may not follow the normal distribution depending upon the composition of traffic stream. A new term Speed Spread Ratio (SSR) is introduced in this paper which is the ratio of difference in 85 and 50 percentile speed to the difference in 50 and 15 percentile speed. If SSR is unity then speed data are truly normally distributed. It is noted that on six lane urban roads, speed data follow a normal distribution only when SSR is in the range of 0.86 – 1.11. The range of SSR is validated on four lane roads also. Keywords—Normal distribution, percentile speed, speed spread ratio, traffic volume.

Traffic Characteristics of Mixed Traffic Flow in Urban Arterials

Motorcycles are one of the main transportation modes in some Asian countries because of their advantages, such as better mobility and lower costs, as compared to automobiles. Most of the current designs of roads, such as speed limit and lane markings, are based on automobile traffic and not entirely suitable for motorcycles. Therefore, there is a need to further investigate the traffic characte...

The effects of traffic mix (the percentage of cars, trucks, buses and so on) are of particular interest in the speed-volume relationship in urban signalized arterials under various geometric and control characteristics. The paper presents some empirical observations on the relation between travel speed, traffic volume and traffic composition in urban signalized arterials. A methodology based on...

Developing a Model for Estimating Weaving and Non-Weaving Speed within Highways Weaving Segments (Tehran)

In weaving section due to a strong need for lane changing, a type of turbulence is created in traffic flow; so, the speedand the capacity of the weaving section decreases. Therefore, investigation of the weaving section is very important. However, due to shortage of the manual for urban principal arterials (highways), calibration of these models is necessary. One of these models...

Optimal Signal Control in Urban Road Networks with High Priority Congested Centers

Keeping the density of traffic flow and air pollution in an acceptable level and developing a good capacity for transit in the high priority areas of the city, is really a big deal in large and crowded cities. To address this problem, a new method of intersection signal optimization is presented in this paper. Based on network fundamental diagrams, an Internal–External Traffic Metering Strategy...

Planning Level Regression Models for Prediction of the Number of Crashes on Urban Arterials in Bangladesh

In most of the developing countries, the metropolitan organizations do not assess the safety consequences of alternative transportation systems and one of the reasons is the lack of suitable methodology. The goal of this paper is to develop practical tools for assessing safety consequences of arterial roads in the context of long-term urban transportation plans in Dhaka city, the capital of Ban...
