Layering in structural-functional grammars

چکیده
This article presents an overview of the notion of layering in three types of structuralfunctional grammars. Layering is interpreted in a broad sense to refer to two types of linguistic differentiations: (1) on the one hand, a distinction between levels of coding, namely, syntax/grammar, semantics, pragmatics; (2) on the other hand, a differentiation between speaker-related vs. content-related material in language, i.e., a distinction between interpersonal vs. representational or ideational aspects of linguistic structuring. We focus on the way in which layering is theorized in three types of linguistic models where layering plays a crucial role in the design of the theory, namely, Systemic-Functional Grammar (SFG), Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) and Role and Reference Grammar (RRG). Special attention is paid to recent developments of these theories which have proposed important changes to the conception of layering. The discussion is organized in terms of four issues: (1) what layers are distinguished (how many?) in the “standard” version of the theory, and how is the relationship between the layers conceived of? (2) What is the motivation and descriptive evidence for the layered model? (3) What is the relationship between the view of a layered linguistic structure and the way in which different levels of encoding are conceived (syntax/semantics/pragmatics)? (4) In what way is the

Groimp as a Platform for Functional- Structural Modelling of Plants
The concept of relational growth grammars (RGG) is a recent effort to address the needs of functional-structural plant modelling. The programming language XL is the first language that implements this concept; it is made available for plant modelling as part of the modelling platform GroIMP. In this paper, an introduction to relational growth grammars and XL will be given using simple but instr...
متن کاملModeling Metabolic Pathways using Graph Grammars
This paper shows the use of a special class of Graph Grammars to model metabolic pathways. The use of Object-based Graph Grammars to this purpose is useful because we can verify specifications of metabolic pathways using model checking techniques and tools. Our proposed model is intended to be expanded to make possible the modeling and properties verification of other biochemical processes, lik...
متن کاملThe production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition
This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...
متن کاملImplementing graph grammars for intelligence analysis in OCaml
We report on implementing graph grammars for intelligence analysis in OCaml. Graph grammars are represented as elements of an algebraic data type in OCaml. In addition to algebraic data types, we use other concepts from functional programming languages to implement features of graph grammars. We use type checking to perform graph pattern matching. Graph transformations are defined as implicit c...
متن کاملInference of Context Free Grammars for Syntactic Analysis of Dna Sequences
This paper presents a syntactic approach for the structural analysis of DNA sequences. The feasibility of modeling nucleic acid sequences within the framework of formal grammars is investigated. A two-step algorithm is described which generates context-free grammars from DNA sequences using directed acyclic word graphs CLIF86] as initial descriptions. A method founded on algorithmic information...
