Ferrets have been described as opportunistic predators (Smith et al., 1995) and differences between diet studies are thought to be related to the availability of prey and carrion items in the different habitats sampled. A greater understanding of the underlying dietary processes may aid in the prediction of functional and numerical responses of ferret populations to manipulations of prey, especially rabbit populations. Ferrets show a large size sexual dimorphism which is a common feature of the family Mustelidae (Moors, 1980). One hypothesis claims that sexual dimorphism is a strategy for avoiding intraspecific competition by enabling the sexes to exploit different food resources (Dayan et al., 1989). Ferret diet studies have found trends that suggest that there are dietary differences between male and female ferrets (see Smith et al., 1995). Roser and Lavers (1976) found that female ferrets ate more mice (Mus musculus L.) in winter compared to males and Pierce (1987) found that adult males ate more lagomorphs and less skinks (Oligosoma spp) and insects than adult female ferrets. However, rabbit control Introduction

Microhabitat selection by feral ferrets (Mustela furo) in a pastoral habitat, East Otago, New Zealand
The spatial distribution of feral ferret (Mustela furo) activity and denning were studied using ink-print tracking tunnels and radio-tracking within pastoral farmland containing a mosaic of grazed (developed and semideveloped) and ungrazed pasture, scrub, tree plantation and scrubby fence lines at Palmerston, East Otago, South Island, New Zealand. Ferrets concentrated their activity in grazed a...
متن کاملSummer/autumn movements, mortality rates and density of feral ferrets (Mustela furo) at a farmland site in North Canterbury, New Zealand
For two summer/autumn periods (1999, 2000), we studied the movements and survival of feral ferrets (Mustela furo L.) at a site in North Canterbury that had been previously subjected to intensive control of ferrets. Movement distances of juvenile ferrets from the place of initial to final capture were generally low (median =1.2 km) though variable [×=2.5± 1.0 (± S.E.M.), range 0.1–21.7 km]. The ...

New Zealand Journal of Ecology (1998) 22(2): 149-159 ©New Zealand Ecological Society behaviour (Norbury, Norbury and Heyward, 1998), we monitored the behaviour of 62 radio-collared ferrets and 25 radio-collared cats in dry, tussock grassland in the South Island of New Zealand. The results reported here are from data either gathered in the absence of rabbit control, or from areas in which partia...
متن کاملSecondary Poisoning of Mammalian Predators during Possum and Rodent Control Operations at Trounson Kauri Park, Northland, New Zealand
A poison baiting operation at Trounson Kauri Park in Northland, New Zealand using first 1080 and then brodifacoum targeted possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rodents (Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus). Predatory mammals were monitored by radio telemetry during the operation. All six feral cats (Felis catus), the single stoat (Mustela erminea) and the single ferret (Mustela fur...
متن کاملInvestigating Childhood and Adolescence Poisoning Exposures in New Zealand Reported to the National Poisons Centre during 2000-2009
Background: Poisoning incidents, in both children and adolescents, are known to occur in New Zealand but little is known about the agents implicated. Methods: All the calls received over the ten years between 2000 and 2009, by the National Poison Centre in New Zealand, were retrospectively reviewed. Calls related to cases involving those less than 19 years were included. The data were analy...
