چکیده

Four groups of three ram lambs were fed, in group pens, the following diets from 4 to 19 wk of age: 1) control (6 mg Cu/kg and 1 mg Mo/kg); 2) control plus 10 mg Cu/kg; 3) control plus 10 mg Mo/kg and 4) control plus 10 mg/kg of both Cu and Mo. Copper and Mo were added to the diet as copper sulfate and sodium molybdate. The main ingredients of the diets were alfalfa hay (20%), oats (20%) and corn (59%). At 19 wk, the animals were allocated randomly to individual metabolism cages and received a single oral dose of 75Se-selenomethionine. Liver Cu concentrations at slaughter (22 wk) were 77, 259, 68 and 316 mg/kg fresh weight for treatments 1 through 4. There was clinical evidence of Cu poisoning in lambs on treatment 2. Sheep given Cu supplements without additional Mo had reduced (P < .05) levels of 75Se activity in muscle compared with control animals. This decrease in muscle 75Se in Cu-supplemented lambs was associated with a nonsignificant increase in 75Se content of other tissues and a nonsignificant increase in fecal excretion of 75Se. Apparent absorption and net retention of 75Se was 80% and 74%, respectively. Long-term ingestion of moderate levels of Cu influenced the metabolism of Se fed as selenomethionine, possibly through effects of chronic Cu toxicity on liver function. (

Metabolic studies of (75Se)selenomethionine and (75Se)selenite in the rat.

I. Information was sought concerning the long-term fate of orally and intravenously administered [75Se]selenomethionine and [7SSe]selenite in rats. 2. Crinary and faecal radioactivity was assayed during the 1st week and whole-body radioactivity was determined weekly for 16 weeks. Rats were killed at intervals for analysis of 75Se tissue distribution. 3. Intestinal absorption after oral administ...

Effect of Conjugated Linoleic Acid On Gene Expressions Involved in Lipid Metabolism in In Vitro Matured Sheep Oocytes

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on in vitro maturation (IVM) and lipid metabolism-related genes in oocytes. In vitro maturation of oocyte was performed in the presence of control (0.0), 50, 100, and 200 µM CLA. Nuclear status and mRNA abundance of selected genes were evaluated following 24 h of IVM. Following the ...

Conceptual Overview Toshihiko Kitajimaa and Yasunori Chiba * Selenomethionine metabolism and its toxicity in yeast

The importance of selenium for organisms can be explained by its existence as selenocysteine in the catalytic centers of glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase. Another selenoamino acid, selenomethionine, is the major form of selenium in foods, and organisms that require selenium as a nutrient directly metabolize selenomethionine to a reactive form of selenium or store it in general p...

Selenium toxicity: cause and effects in aquatic birds.

There are several manners in which selenium may express its toxicity: (1) an important mechanism appears to involve the formation of CH(3)Se(minus sign) which either enters a redox cycle and generates superoxide and oxidative stress, or forms free radicals that bind to and inhibit important enzymes and proteins. (2) Excess selenium as selenocysteine results in inhibition of selenium methylation...

A human model of selenium that integrates metabolism from selenite and selenomethionine.

Selenium (Se) metabolism is affected by its chemical form in foods and by its incorporation (specific vs. nonspecific) into multiple proteins. Modeling Se kinetics may clarify the impact of form on metabolism. Although the kinetics of Se forms have been compared in different participants, or the same participants at different times, direct comparisons of their respective metabolism in the same ...
